Just a tip from an IT help agent. Suspend your bit locker instead of turning it off completely before you switch out the motherboard, then select resume protection on your next boot. The recovery key should be repopulated to your new board's TPM. I takes far less time than to decrypt and re-encrypt your drive.

I think the AMD version coming later this year should probably address most of your issues, that extra efficiency should result in lower fan noise, better battery, better GPU perf etc.

This year marks the third generation Framework and the last two years show how fantastic their original design has been able to meet their sustainability, repairability, and upgradability goals with multiple generations and now multiple brands of CPU's. Great, honest review by josh. I'm still an enthusiastic supporter and user of Framework products and look forward to their continued success and releases.

I am much more comfortable with the philosophy of the framework laptop than I am with Apple. It's the same reason I refuse to buy Nintendo. I am finally able to vote with my wallet for the laptop space, and I WILL. I got the framework laptop with 11th Gen, I might upgrade to AMD end of this year. Good work Framework.

It's cool that you can put the old motherboard into a case and turn it into a mini PC.

Framework seems like a sustainable company. I can see a future where they grow past many of the other windows laptop manufacturers.

It is a pity that laptop manufacturers are chasing only CPU&GPU power and do not take into account the of the fan noise, which should also be quiet and efficient if a person works for 8 hours at a laptop. Silent is very important for comfortable works. thanks for the review

Being upgradable makes it an instant winner and pretty much the only smart choice to do.
As of specs vs other laptops, just remember what was considered good 2, 4 or 10 years ago, ppl paid extra for an edge just to be outclassed shortly after, Framework is not the best, but it is pretty good, and can keep that state as long as its upgraded.

I have the Framework Laptop i7 1280P version, and while I also occaisionally experience these excessive fan bursts, these really are just fairly short. I'm a software developer and most of the time its completely silent. The fans only kick in when it boosts, like when compiling a program or during startup.

Awesome review Josh. Truth be told, I had not heard about Framework, so I learned something here. Just picked up a Macbook M2 14" and loving it so far (a massive upgrade from the HP/ Windows I was using). Congrats on your new studio too!

Absolutely loved that you addressed P series complaints. I have seen light laptops go from U series to P and H and tripling their TDP. It never makes sense to use anything above 15W TDP CPU for thin laptops.

Thanks for getting this review out so quickly. I always look forward to hearing your opinions.

Got the first gen framework with an i5 11th gen processor. It's perfectly adequate for a development machine, running Ubuntu. The only gripe that I have with this system is that even pretty light gaming (4X games for example) still doesn't really run all that well. If that gets substantially better on the AMD version, I'll consider the upgrade.

Can't wait for you to test the newer 16" Framework with dedicated GPU!

Thank you for including the information about the fans. It's one thing I look for before buying any laptop, and so many reviews never even touch on it.

Framework will be my next upgrade for Laptop. I love their philosophy of sustainability and upgradeabilty. I have owned Intel Laptops in all but one of them (AMD A series) I am considering Trying AMD when I go for the Framework.
I love that there is support for Linux that is there rather then up in the air unlike Most Windows OEM's. When it comes to which one I want. I am looking foward to the Framework 16 as a Dell M6800 owner. I would love to Upgrade to the Framework 16 and then add a DGPU to it later on. The framework 13 ain't a bad option eiether

I wish they'd release a 14" version "pro"-version with an added OcuLink-port on the mainboard with beefier cooling, like a child between the Framework 16 and the GPD Win Max 2. Perhaps the cooling could be good enough for the 7840HS (or HX) without a dedicated graphics card.

It seems the perfect laptop for developers: Linux native, upgradable, light and fast. Hope they can fix the problems. Very excited for the 16 inches version. Let's see what framework will bring for us.
