Upgradeability and user-serviceable notebooks are few and far between in this day and age of soldered memory and glued-together chassis. Framework aims to change that with their #FrameworkLaptop13. We had the chance to check out their DIY Kit for the 2023 iteration, and it seems like you can indeed put together a modular, well-performing notebook.

The fact that Framework supports not only CPU swaps but platform swaps (Intel to AMD) is a bigger win than I think most people realize.
This thing is awesome and blends the upgradeability of business machines from a decade ago with modern hardware.

Framework is definitely one to cheer for, this is *exactly* the kind of thing we need. Real sustainability, not just "there is 2% recycled plastic in the chassis" or nonsense like that.

This definitely proves that there is no reason at all for laptop platforms to not be as upgradable and maintainable as their desktop counterparts. Well, no technical reason.

My wife has a first gen 13th in framework. We love it. As soon as the 16 inch is available, i will be ordering. Be able to repurpose a battery into portable battery bank, or repurpose a previous mobo into a sff computer, change out the ports on the fly, replace or repair everything is amazing. There is a really good community out there as well.
Thanks for the spotlight. The thought of a 780m in a 13 inch is really tempting but i am holding out for the 16. An upgradable gpu alone makes it worth it.

Great job Framework! I'm still waiting for a 2-in-1 version, but I see progress and am very optimistic 😊

This is real hard burn for Lenovo. 64GB RAM inside 13" laptop that starts under 1000€. Lenovo can't fit 64GB RAM inside any 14 to 16" Yoga, Ideapad, thinkpad under 3000€.

I think this was one of, if not the best video you ever made, especially the Unboxing & Build segment. The angles, lightning, image quality were top notch.

As for the laptop, the main idea behind it is wonderful, I'm curious whether they can carve out some market share in the performance laptop segment. There are many successful gaming laptop designs. Framework can learn from them and adapt those ideas to fit their modular model.

Wow, this is pretty revolutionary, even if I agree about the limited (for now) display!! Very cool!

I have been enjoying my Framework laptop since I received my pre-order last October & even swapped out the board for the 13th Gen recently. It's great that these boards can be re-purposed for desktop applications!

I've got an 11th Gen Intel version, have deliberately not upgraded because I'm waiting for things to expire on my current laptop and to hopefully replace it with the upcoming 16in version (with a GPU!) later in the year. The performance of the 13 is fine, fans are a little eager to come on, battery life is so-so (definitely a first-gen product!) but performance for me is pretty good. With the latest bigger battery and mainboard I'm hearing good things about the speed and battery life. Looks like the Framework laptop and company is growing nicely into it's own skin, takes a while to optimise the design and build momentum, but I'm very happy with the product and will definitely buy from them in the future.

I just got my framework laptop recently and not only do I love the philosophy behind the brand but I love the laptop itself. It's a great user experience, the keyboard is nice, the colors and accurate and virbrant, the battery life is good, and I think the monitor size is perfect for me. Before I got framework and was searching for a laptop, I really couldn't find one that didn't have a big con: short battery life, lack of ports, all plastic build. So happy with my laptop

Great review, brother 👏
I imagine that a lot of people will wonder if the Framework 13 (or upcoming Framework 16) is (or will be) the best laptop on the market.
Whether or not it is the best laptop is debatable. But I genuinely do think that they are the best laptop manufacturer. The innovation and potential is unlike anything I've seen, and that too in a world where there are massive companies that have been producing laptops for decades. Framework are definitely a company to watch!

For gaming it's gonna be the framework 16" this year, or accept the performance hit on an egpu.

I'm thinking this is great for small businesses that outsource their IT.

Thanks for the review! I can’t wait to see the Framework 16. Also, may I ask if you will be reviewing the Ryzen variant of Alienware x16?

How do you make sure the cooling is good enough when you swap new chips in? Can you swap a beefier heatsink in?

Can't wait for the framework 16, might be a much better competitor then the 13 version

Framework needs to provide more display options and especially they need to improve their speakers & Mic by a lot! Otherwise I really love this design & idea, can't want for the 16 inch version so that I can replace my old notebook from 2018 and potentially keep it as long as Framework continues to provide Updates & Upgrades for each Generation.
