How to Buy Your First Luxury Watch – Tips to Succeed

How to buy your first luxury watch is no easy task. You'll probably go crazy when it's time to do it!

On this video I give you watch buying tips that are easy to follow in order to help you make a smart and successful purchase. These tips and advice comes from many years of collecting watches and working in the watch industry.

Tip #1: Buy the Seller, Bigger Doesn't Necessarily Mean Better.

When it comes to the place where you plan on buying your first watch, whether it's a Rolex or an Audemars Piguet, the most important thing is the reputation of the dealer, not their size. Ask other people that have nice watches what they recommend, but also check reviews on places like Google and Yelp.

Tip #2: Don't Get Blinded by the Authorized Dealers.

Just because you're buying your first watch from an authorized dealer (or AD) of the brand you're interested in, this doesn't mean that the AD won't screw you. In fact, oftentimes they do. Check a dealers reputation, whether they are an AD or a re-seller of watches. Most of the times, you're better off buying the watch preowned or un-worn from a reseller. An authorized dealers has pressure from the manufacturer to sell at full retail and even though you think that it might be safer to buy from them, the high price that you will likely pay will mean that it will probably take a much longer period of time before you can recover the cost of your investment.

Tip #3: Buying your First Watch from an Internet vs a Brick and Mortar Store

Personally, I like being able to try on the watch before I buy it and that's an advantage of buying your first dress watch in a physical store. Some physical stores also sell online, but there are some e-commerce businesses that exclusively use the Internet to sell. Make sure that if you decide to buy your first luxury watch through a website, that the company has a good reputation and answers all your questions in terms of returns and warranties.

Tip #4: Box and Papers, Are They Really That Important When Buying a Watch?

My advice to you when you're looking for your first watch is not to make the box and papers the deal killer. Some new watch buyers get a warm and fuzzy feeling from knowing that they're getting a box and paper along with their watch, and, while these factors become more important when buying some higher end watch models, they're not normally crucial when buying a new watch.

Tip #5: Always Get a Receipt with the Serial Number on It

To me this is the most important tip when buying a watch. Make sure that the receipt or invoice that you get from the seller has the serial number of the watch you're buying and that the number matches the serial on the watch. For new Rolex watches, the serial number is engraved in the inner bezel. This is the one thing that can protect your investment if all else fails.

Tip #6: Find out What the Warranty and Return Policy Are

This is very important. Make sure that you get at least a 1-year warranty. If the watch has not broken in a year's time, then chances are that nothing bad is going to happen to it; so get a one-year warranty from the seller if possible. Also, make sure to know exactly what the seller's return policy are in case you would like to return the watch.

Is the ETA 2892A2 a luxury movement? Should I discount or select one watch over another based on the movement? I'm interested in a Swiss watch I can't find any info for other than it's name La Vallee, and movement.

Absolutely love this channel! Can you make a video on your experience with fake watches coming into the store maybe for a trade in or as a shopper, or just being out and about and you spotted a fake watch. I'm pretty sure you have experienced this. If you haven't it's fine. Your videos are awesome Eric! I'm definitely buying a watch from Eric in the near future. He's really cool and teaches newbies like myself the watch game. Fair trade to earn a lifetime customer.

Hi Eric, thanks for your contribution in this video. I want to ask, as you previously said that you weren’t an actual “seller”, and as time goes by you became a seller, and as a private seller do you provide guarantees or how you fix the watch issues for example pin that felt off, some problem with the bezel, machine, etc.
Thanks for this helpful video Eric.

Eric what if there’s no resellers or grey market here??? About to buy my first watch and I’m really close to buying from an ad. It’s mostly ad’s. also how can I find a reseller??

What if they offer you their own guarantee? I mean if I buy a rolex from this retail store (joma shop) im not that relaxed knowing that if the watch is brand new and has any problem they will have it fixed by their own means and not Rolex. Any advice on this type of situations?

I bought from a reputable authorized dealer because I'm not an expert and I wanted to make sure I didn't get a fake. I know I probably overpaid, but I wanted the watch manufacturer name. It was a gift to me. I have all of the papers and correct receipts.
