What Golf Clubs should you buy? This video is a beginner’s guide to buying golf clubs, and which brands you should choose from.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are a lot of clubs to choose from when you are looking to purchase your first set. They come in all shapes and sizes, and each one has a specific purpose.

A list of club types you should look to buy is in the list below:

- Driver
- 3-Wood
- 5-Wood
- Irons (4-iron through Pitching Wedge)
- Sand Wedge
- Putter

As far the brands you should look into that produce good quality clubs, check this list below:

- Taylormade
- Titleist
- Ping
- Callaway
- Odyssey (putters by Callaway)
- Cobra
- Mizuno
- Srixon
- Cleveland
- Nike (no longer produce equipment, but can buy used)
- Adams

If you’re starting out, and don’t want to fork out a ton of money for these brands, then don’t buy brand new. Buy them used. There are always people selling used clubs, and you can find great deals for clubs in great condition.

We also recommend that you start out by using Regular (R) flex shafts. You can always go to local golf stores to test out clubs, and/or get fitted as well.

I have been through this in the last 4 years since I retired and took up golf as a recreation.
My take is to buy second hand and buy the non- big 4 to save money. No doubt you will change your clubs within two year as you improve your game.

Brands I would suggest are: Cobra, Cleveland, Wilson, Tour Edge, Adams; all good quality brands and mid- price range.

Driver: minimum loft 10.5 degrees, possibly 12+ if your swing speed is lower than 90 mph ( most seniors / women) . Don't go too stiff in the shaft at first ( regular Flex is a good starting point unless you have a very abrupt swing and are built like a gorilla)

Ditch the 3 wood idea and get a 5 wood 18-19 degrees or a 4 wood 16-17, they are easier to hit off the ground. You could also use a 7 wood ( 21-22 degrees) instead of a 4 iron

Hybrids; in the range of 19-24 degrees which you can use for tee shots while you are learning to hit the Driver.

Irons: Hollow bodied super game improvement are so easy to hit and forgiving. Cleveland HB Launcher series, Wilson Launchpads, Cobra T-rail, Tour edge ? model name . 5 iron ( 24 degrees) -AW is workable for slower swing speed players. They look like a cross between a hybrid and an iron and many experienced golfers think they are ugly, but they work! You want to improve fast ; yes? If you buy cavity backed game improvement irons with strong lofts, don't go below 26 degrees loft. Insert hybrids to keep the ball up in the air. Same applies to single length irons. It is faster to learn with single length irons ( Cobra, PinHawk), but stay away from the 4, 5, 6 irons if you have a slower swing speed. You can get SL Hybrids instead ( I use them)

Wedges: cavity backed wedges are more forgiving than bladed wedges ( expert level clubs) Cleveland CBX2 in lofts to suit your PW club loft with 4-5 degrees loft difference between them. i.e. if your PW is 45 degrees loft, look for a 50 GW, 55-56 SW, 60 LW .

Putter: whatever feels good to you. Maybe think of using a chipper/ putter style club at first until your skills improve.

Instruction: if you have a local PGA teacher use them. If you don't, select one YouTuber and stick with them. My favourites would be Shawn Clement, Clay Ballard., Danny Maude. If you have physical limitations ( like me/ too many fractured bones) I suggest you try the Jim Venetos swing. It has got me to 13 handicap in 2 years. It looks funny, but it works!

I hope this helps

This is the best video I have found for a true beginner golfer who is looking to buy their first clubs.

I just started going to the driving range a few months ago to practice and be ready for a course, I’ve bought my clubs from goodwill/thrift stores so far. I have aero burner 12.5 driver, top flite 3w, callaway X 5W, lancer oversize irons 5-PW, extra top flite wedge, and Wilson alignment blade putter. Combined cost under 60 dollars. Once I start playing courses I’ll look into upgrading but for now I’m focused on swinging consistently

I’m not the best golfer but, for some reason, I’ve been asked this several times. One of the things I think is useful for beginners is describing the difference between the kinds of irons, more specifically why blades would be something to avoid for new golfers.

I’ve got a pretty obscure golf bag, brand called Alien, got them for my driver, 3 wood, and irons. It’s my dad‘s clubs that he doesn’t use very much anymore and they’re a bit too short for me so this video really helps for future reference!

Thanks for the video, exactly what I was looking for. It would be awesome if you did a follow up with more specific models for beginners, I'm looking for a set but I am a bit surprised at how steep prices are for the main brands

Thank you for making this video! 4 years later, it's as relevant as ever. I have a question, though I'm not sure if you address it in later videos - what is the oldest age of clubs one should get when buying used. I've heard different advice ranging from "no more than 10" to "not older than 20". I know opinions differ, but wondering what your take is on club age?

Personally, I would recommend a 5 wood, a 5 hybrid, 6-9 iron, PW, SW and a putter. Driver, GW and LW are optional, but fun to play around with. Hitting the driver well is hard. A beginner player benefits from the short game. But too many clubs can be overwhelming. Also, start with lessons and Par-3 courses.

If I'm not going to get a fitting, how would you go about deciding at what place in the bag a beginner should replace an iron for a hybrid or 2. I know it is common to only go up to about a 5 or 6 iron than a 5 and 3 hybrid. Looking for a quick guide to deciding for my first bag.. clubhead speed whatever you think is a good strategy?

Very informative video. I am just getting into golf and I borrowed my friends clubs for a while but I could feel they weren’t made for my height. I am 6’5” for reference. Where could I get clubs made for my height?
