Personally like the school of sci-fi where you have to shut down ship systems for the jump and slowly bring them back up after the jump is finished - meaning your basically blind and helpless for a few seconds.

Maybe leave the enemy markers during jump? Could be less immersive and cinematic, sure, but you could use that for gameplay. You get a couple seconds to prepare for a huge furball, or to decide to jump right back out again because there are too many markers. Anyways, as a long time fan of Escape Velocity, I am totally stoked!
