3 Reasons why Buying Music is Still Better Than Streaming

Spotify is incredibly popular and nobody seems to be buying music anymore. But is spotify really better than buying? I think that there is still a powerful argument for owning music, even with how far streaming has come as of late.

Nothing beats owning a physical copy... its like having personal library of books, kindle can't replace that experience and feeling

Yes. If you love the artist or band, buying the physical copy of their album alone is enough support for the creators of your favorite music.

Also, going to record stores or places that sells CDs and vinyl like Barnes and Noble, and trying to find that one CD or record you’ve been looking for years is like a treasure hunt for me! It’s like once you’ve finally found it, you get this feeling of accomplishment that “yeah! This is the one I’ve been looking for for ages! I’ve finally found it!!” You can never get that feeling from just streaming music on Spotify, it’s just not the same. CD, vinyl, tapes, I collect them all!!

The biggest reason for me to why I buy CDs: better audio quality. Yes, streaming is easy, convenient and cheap, but the quality, even if you are a streaming Premium user, will always be a lower than a CD.

Illegal music downloads is still a thing (come on, admit that you downloaded too). But the best thing about buying music is the thrill of the hunt. Searching each music store for that CD or tape you've been looking for, and then going home and popping it into your stereo system and finally hearing the songs is the best feeling ever. It's the best way to enjoy music (aside from live performances of course)

My philosophy is 'Listen to music for free or buy if you can afford. But always stay connected with your favorite bands' official site to make donations or buy merch.

Well it actually depends on the person, Im getting alittle tired of the modern era. So I decided to go Old School and use CDs again.

It's the same with streaming music as it is with renting an apartment. As long as you pay for the music/apartment per month, you own it. But as soon as you stop paying, the music/apartment is gone. Like if you buy music for $100 you own that forever. But if you pay like $5 monthly you do own all the songs in the world for that time. Lets say you pay those $5 for 10 years every month. Then you have spend $600 but in the end as you stop paying you have nothing left. The songs you bought however will stay as long as you live...

Also I don't quite understand how some people are flexing when they say Oh I have Spofify Premium I can listen to all the music in the world. Like if that would be a symbol for being rich. Thats rather a symbol for being poor, because you can't afford to pay like $1 or $2 for a song you want to listen to. It's so stupid how music streams have become so popular.
Like on the one hand you pay $1000 for your brand new IPhone X and $5000 for your brand new Rolex Watch and another $1000 for your Balenciaga Outfit and at the same time you walk around flexing with Spotify Premium like if that would mean something...people are crazy...

CDs are better because they are great collectibles

I have about 17 CDs and I love them all! I have all Taylor Swift's albums, two Panic! At the Disco albums, Both of Grace VanderWaal's CDs, (her EP and Debut album) Dove Cameron CDs, (a girl from Disney Channel) and two of Sabrina Carpenter's albums. I love CDs and have been collecting them for about 3 or 4 years now I would say. 😀

1. You can download the songs on Spotify. So you aren’t dependent from any Wifi connection.
2. If your Spotify device gets broken is your library still safe in the cloud. But if your house burns down is your library gone forever.
3. It’s usual for most young unknown artists to only publish their songs online because it’s for them the only affordable way to publish their music. There are cases where an artist earns more from my many Apple Music streams compared to buying the songs on iTunes. Yes: one time buying the song on iTunes means more money then one stream on Apple Music. But Apple Music doesn’t count the streams of music that you already bought once on iTunes. So they would earn less if I would own their songs.

Yep, I also love music. I am a bit older, 37, and I still buy mp3s and CDs because I enjoy owning and sharing music without boundaries. Also, when I stop paying for streaming I own NOTHING. I only use streaming to discover music every now and then.

If you love music, you own it. Genuine music lovers own at least some physical music. I haven't met one yet that doesn't.

I met a girl recently who was massively into festivals. I decided to put on some charm and said "Ahh thats really cool bet you can't name 10 albums"

This girl no longer speaks to me, but she couldn't name 10 albums. And obviously owns no physical music.

I agree but the biggest reason I buy CD's is the audio quality.

the only reason buying music is best because we can actually get the files to our "hands" and keep them forever....but if i had to buy all the music i have on Apple Music, and Spotify !?it would cost thousand dollars...:(

Very meaningful reflections. I agree with you 100%. I also have my vinyl collection from the time I was 6 years old. And I am 52 now!

It does feel good to hold the paper notes and artwork! Definitely an experience! Especially if it can get signed by the artist or any affiliated producers. Plus if the internet were to ever get to a place where censorship banned songs or albums you like for political, religious, or controversial reasons, they could never take away your physical copy if you hide it really well. That’s why underground music is actually kind of cool. Like some rapper keeping a box of CDs in their closet or their trunk! Only a handful of people are jamming the music and get to be part of the “special circle” of people who have their hands on the real physical copies!

It cost $10/month for spotify so in a year 1 spent $100. I was better of just buying the songs on itunes since I only listen to the say 30-50 songs

I've gone back to buying cd's and ripping to flac format, it's only a matter of time if not already that the music industry gets scrutinised for content to ban!
