Depression is not the same as sadness.

Sadness is not the same as depression.

Depression is a mental illness that more than 264 million people around the world experience.

Sadness is a human emotion that everyone experiences at certain times during their lives.

Depression makes someone feel sad constantly or most of the time.

Sadness doesn’t make someone depressed.

Depression doesn’t have a specific trigger.

Sadness usually has a link to a specific trigger such as failing an exam, not getting a job or falling out with a friend.

Depression can occur in both men and women.

Sadness can occur in both men and women too.

Depression can affect anyone regardless of age.

Sadness can also affect anyone regardless of age.

Depression is a longer term mental illness and may last for a long time.

Sadness is temporary and people who are sad are not usually sad for more than a few days.

Depression affects all aspects of someones life, it can affect their social life, their friendships, their relationships and their daily life.

Sadness usually only affects the situation in what caused the person to feel or be sad, someone who is sad can still carry on their daily life without any problems at all.

Depression can cause many different symptoms including; constantly feeling sad, empty or numb, irritability, fatigue, changes in sleeping or eating patterns, difficulty concentrating, loss of interest, pleasure or joy in things you used to love, feeling guilty, worthless, hopeless or useless and unexplained physical symptoms such as headaches.

Sadness can cause you to cry and feel hopeless however people who are sad have moments when they are able to laugh, have a good time and be comforted, sadness doesn’t have a long list of possible symptoms like depression does.

Sadness can be treated by simply making some minor lifestyle changes.

Knowing the different between depression and sadness is important and I hope this video has helped you understand the major difference between the two.

Millions of people around the world experience sadness or depression at some point in their lives. However, recognizing the difference between a diagnosis of depression and the emotion of sadness can help a person process both in a healthful way.
The Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) note that depression is one of the most common mental health illnesses in the United States.
Feeling sad is an integral part of depression, but they are not the same. Knowing and understanding the differences can help a person recognize when to seek treatment.
