This actually has happened to me a handful of times. I have horrible social anxiety and really bad ADHD/autism, so making friends is already an extremely hard thing for me to do. And being in a military family that moved around a lot, I couldn't hang on to the friends I made.

When high school rolled around and I was turning 18, it was a huge deal to me because I didn't think I'd make it to 18. So I invited all (or at least who I thought were) my friends. And since my birthday is right after Valentine's day, my friends said they were 'busy'. I checked their snapchats and they were all down at the beach at a bonfire. My Step-dad saw this and said 'You know what, fuck those kids. Come on, I'll take you out to eat and we'll go to the craft shop.'

My Step-dad made my day.

That first scenario happened to me once. I went into school, gave everyone their invites first thing in the morning, all my friends put their invites in their schoolbags. Now, crucially, this was the last day before school holidays, and my party was during the holidays.
Fast forward to the day before school starts, a couple of days after my party, and my mum got a large number of phone calls from my friends' parents, who had just emptied their kids bag, only to find the invite and realise they had missed the date...
