What's the largest powers of 4 that fits into 73? 4^3 = 64, and you use 1 of them. So you have a 1 in the 4th place value column left of the decimal point. What's leftover? 9. Does 4^2 fit? No. So you have a 0 in the 3rd column. Does 4^1 fit? Yes. How many? Twice. So you have a 2 in the 2nd column. What's left over? 1. How do you make 1 from a power with base 4? 4^0. How many do you have? 1. So you have a 1 in the first column. 73 in base 10 is 1021. That's how I do it. You can do this with anything.

If you think of regular base 10 place value table as 10^0 (ones), 10^1 (tens), 10^2 (hundreds) etc. and representing numbers as powers of 10, e.g. 5338 = 5x10^3 + 3x10^2 + 3x10^1 + 8x10^0 you can do the same thing with any number system. For example, 198 in base 5... "base 5" can be interpreted as (or maybe actually literally means?) a power with the base of 5. First question - what's the largest power of 5 that can fit into 198? The answer is 5^3. How many of them fit? Just 1. What's left over? 73. Does 5^2 fit into 73? Yes, two of them fit. What's left over? 23. Does 5^1 fit into 23? Yes. Four times, with three left over. So, we can represent the number 198 as 1x5^3 + 2x5^2 + 4x5^1 + 3x5^0 or 1243.
