What are TCP and UDP?
TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) is a network protocol that moves your data over the internet from your device to a web server. You use the TCP protocol whenever you chat to your friends online, send emails, or browse the web.

UDP stands for User Datagram Protocol. Compared to TCP, the UDP protocol is less trustworthy but faster and more straightforward. It’s valuable in situations where higher speeds are crucial, like in streaming or gaming.

How TCP and UDP work

TCP is more reliable than UDP. It transfers your data packets from your device to a web server. UDP is faster and simpler, but it doesn’t guarantee the delivery of your data.

What is the main difference between TCP and UDP?

UDP is faster than TCP, because the user doesn’t have to allow or acknowledge receipt to resent the data. This lets UDP establish connections and transfer data faster. However, this also raises some concerns whether UDP is actually safe. In terms of the UDP vs TCP VPN debate, OpenVPN works best on a UDP port, although it can be configured to run on any port.

First of all, it ain’t your choice which to use. It all depends on the technology your using. Certain applications use UDP, and certain use TCP. VoIP typically uses UDP because it is faster and doesn’t have to create a three-way handshake. HTTP and HTTPS would most likely use TCP, because TCP windowing is a great tool that can calculate how much of a load your connection can take.

In terms of security, regardless of data rate, are both protocols equally secure, or is there greater security in TCP? I mean, can't they steal your data or hack?
