Some signs that your 5-year-old may be developmentally delayed include if they're not able to communicate effectively, so if you're not understanding what they're saying or if they're not following directions. Also if they have extreme behavior, if they're very fearful or very sad, that's cause for concern. If they're not proficient at the playground or outside, if they're not really great with kicking or throwing a ball or running, or they're not showing interest in some of these things, that's cause for concern. If they're not engaged or interactive with their friends or willing to participate with their friends, that's cause for concern.
Any time that they lose a skill that they once had, that's also cause for concern. Another thing is if your child cannot attend for longer than five minutes, if they seem distracted, if they can't sit at a table, if they're not able to sit and have their meal or even draw a picture because they just do not have the attention span, that's cause for concern.
The main thing is if you have an instinct, if you have a feeling that something may be off and you're just not sure, it's okay. Discuss it with your child's pediatrician. Share your concerns with them and see what they have to say.
