I'd like to add another point: you don't have to switch, but could use it along side some other OS. Have an old notebook collecting dust, because Windows got to heavy and bloated for it? Try Linux on it! Great way to play around and learn without much risk.

I honestly think that the Linux community exaggerates the state of gaming on Linux. It's true that there's still a ways to go, but Proton has made gaming better on Linux even since I switched in March 2022. I'm not saying you're wrong, Jay; just that the community in general undersells to newbies the state of gaming on this OS.

As a Linux beginner, I've only had great support online from Zorin OS and Linux Mint users. Their forums are a fantastic resource.

Infighting isn't the only issue with the Linux community. A lot of them get defensive and hostile if you suggest Windows is currently a better fit for certain users. Eg. there are a loads of gamers who aren't super technical. They DON'T want to research OSes, be limited in hardware choices, have to troubleshoot / tweak to get certain titles working, deal with multiplayer issues caused by anti-cheat etc. And that's completely reasonable - most people want technology to be transparent and "just work". But some Linux diehards are either delusional and have convinced themselves those issues don't exist, or they think anyone who doesn't want to research OS distros isn't worthy of using a computer. The worst part is their attitude just makes Linux more unappealing to outsiders 🤦‍♂

You forgot to mention three major pros for Linux:
- it doesn't push any shit on you without you knowing that. Like Windows with every small security update brings additional truck of bloatware you deleted last time
- Linux doesn't collect telemetry on you, doesn't keylog, doesn't mine your data, doesn't mine crypto-shit-coins in favor for some big corporation. Because no one knows what all these hundreds of windows processes are doing, when they are eating CPU cycles and memory. Beauty of Linux as an open source - you can get all the information about what each piece of software is doing on your machine and if you don't like it - turn it off
- last thing. Linux is very lean to your resources. It's lightweight by default, and if you ever want to, you can even slim it down more. It doesn't eat 3-4 Gb upon startup just because it's there, like Windows. It doesn't need 20 Gb just to be installed

Con: Limited software available on Linux. Like me, you'll most likely have to learn new software before making the switch. A lot of Linux software can be installed on a Windows machine, so you can take the time to learn it while still using Windows. I did. It made switching much smoother and easier.

Spot on as always Jay. Im in to my second year with linux as my daily driver. The only thing I would add is that linux is a journey, not a destination. At the start there’s a ton of strange stuff happening all the time, all at once on the computer, and it might be a bit frightening at first. But with an adventure's mindset, and the vast amount of documentation on the internet (Like the videos from “Learn Linux Tv”) you will learn to love computers. If not the computers, maybe you fall in love with the dedication and the ethics of FOSS developers, or how some organizations fight for important software licenses that secure future development in ICT, or that some Communities stand up for the implementations if features that track users and is a clear violation of privacy. There’s something for everyone. Even those who don’t want to be a nerd to use Linux 😉

Con: The Linux community is filled with condescending newbs that think they are experts and bash Windows because they think it makes them cool.

It’s an OS.

I have several machines I use on a daily basis for software development - a mix of windows, Linux and macOS. They all have their place and, like computer languages, they have their religious followings- which I find annoying because I believe diversity and choice is always a good thing.

The Linux community is getting better. Distro pushing is still a thing, but shrinking.

I've been using Linux since 2006. It has a slightly higher learning curve than Windows and it's not perfect. A handful of proprietary hardware, like the Elgato Stream Deck, hasn't worked on Linux. Still, with all its flaws I prefer Linux because of the privacy, control, and ownership it gives me over my hardware and data.

Fortunately nowadays there are manufacturer selling computers made for Linux with Linux already installed. See System76, Tuxedo Computers, Slimbook, etc.

Cons: You will be fiddling with your computer more
Pros: It's fun to fiddle with Linux! 😄

Pro: Because it's the king of server OSes, Linux has a huge library of free container apps available that people can use in their own home labs.

I agree that Ventoy would be an excellent tool for the curious aspiring new Linux user. It would have been great to have in my distro hopping days, but due to hardware limitations at the time I couldn't even virtualize anything more than a CLI or basic window manager, and even live CDs weren't very common. I would say that Ventoy is an excellent tool for any Linux user, and honestly, for any advanced computer user in general.

I love your channel! I've been watching it for years. Due to my social security I can''t support you with $ but I can praise you and your very helpful channel. Yes the community can be, well lets say, when they do offer help they still for get you know nothing. What makes your channel a stand out is your easy going presentation and you don't talk down to us new users. Thank you!

If you are planning on installing linux on a laptop, you can create a bootable USB drive and boot the laptop from it. This will tell you if things like wifi will work at least, before you commit to fully installing it.
