China's ambassador to Australia held a rare press conference in Canberra rejecting accusations of human rights abuses in Xinjiang province. As calls continue for the West to do more, the US and UK have responded with sanctions against China. While Australia has welcomed the move, it's yet to impose any sanctions of its own. Stan Grant speaks to Natasha Kassam, the Director of the Lowy Institute's Public Opinion and Foreign Policy Program, about what Australia can do.

As the country with the longest list of wars in the 21st century, the USA doesn't have the right to call out on someone for human rights abuses. Note: I'm against all abuses, but let's have the same criteria for everyone. The USA has to be held accountable for the victims in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Serbia, Kosovo...before pointing a finger at others.

Australia will rise and fall with the US and UK. Do hope that Canada and New Zealand doesn't

Iron ore tariffs - rather than stop selling China our Iron ore why not increase its price? The government can slap on a tariff for iron ore going to china. That way we get what we want - money, and China can still get its iron ore to build their military. Ideally we would not sell them our iron ore at all, but I suspect our government needs the income to fund our own military.

China invaded East Turkistan (Xinjiang) in 1949, and a million Han Chinese moved to East Turkistan (Xinjiang) every year since 1980.

I would like to see Freedom Stars required for all imported products. Similar to energy and health ratings consumers should know more about how their products are made and under what conditions. Often consumers will support poor foreign government behavior due to ignorance.

Why are you spreading all these malicious lies? Where are the evidence? I have been to Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang. It is a vibrant city with tourists everywhere. What genocide, concentration camp or forced labor?

The whole thing is really what Biden said, the cultural difference between China and the west. China, the Confucius culture, the West, history in the last 200 years showed, the colonist culture.

It's about time we recognise that, as a democratic nation, Australia can not continue to *condone through silence* the activities of the CCP in Xinjiang, Hong Kong, the South China Sea and other abuses like slave and child labour. The CCP has a track record of coming to terms/agreement then ignoring that agreement resulting in the continued expansion of CCP abuses.
Maybe as consumers and voters we need to express that Australian Governments and Businesses should all have a public policy on these issues because the silence is deafening and the long term result of this silence will only lead to more suffering.
