In Cherokee, one says O'Siyo. Oh-See-Yo or See-Yo, depending on the dialect (for lack of a better word). Like Aloha, it also means goodbye.

My parents are born and raised in Ireland. I'm a Yank, but I am very close with my Irish relatives. One of my favorites was my father's brother Frank. A country tailor for 75 years (!), he and I became the best of buddies. As we traveled around Connacht together, he would never greet anyone by saying hello or good day or any other common greeting. He ALWAYS said, "God be with you!" I thought it a bit strange, but he was very religious and I simply chalked it up to that phrase being "old-fashioned". It wasn't until I started taking an Irish class that the first thing I learned was "Dia dhuit!" When I heard that, I could almost see my dear uncle (RIP) speaking to me.

Wow, you are actually teaching authentic Irish, not that Caighdeån (Irish for lack of poetry and beauty) stuff. I took Irish classes years ago, but I’m not gifted in languages, although my most direct lineage is Irish (my grandmother was from Ireland). I might have another go at it with your course. Slån.

Please show us how to say “Tír gan teanga, tír gan anam.” Such a vital and beautiful quote. I’ve tried to find it, but I have been unsuccessful. I am loving the lessons. I have read through the first resource you sent.

My Irish family members would speak it when they didn't want me to understand some private matters. Thank you for making your videos, Siobhan!

I've always wondered what they used to say for hello in pre-Christian Ireland. I'm sure Dia could still have been there but Muire not so much! Thanks for the video!

Hi! I was just wondering if you could make a video of all the different ways to pronounce "duit" because every time I hear it it's pronounced differently, and I just thought it would be helpful to hear them all. Thank you for helping us learn Irish!!
