I highly recommend doing a oil filter change with your favorite ratchet because oil always drips down into the ratchet

I just let my ratchets fall into my oil drain bucket that always does the job

After it’s oil change, make sure you put the switch to off position so the battery doesn’t die…

I just smack it on the ground a few times and it seems to do the trick for me, but this works too.

Didnt realise that a bit of lubrication fixes backlash 🤣

Seriously though, the reason why the ratchet no longer freely rotates when youre undoing a bolt is becauseonce you loosen something, there is more friction in the ratchet mechanism than the friction on the bolt theads being engaged.

Yes lube can help this to a point, but the spring strength would have a bigger impact..

Grease provides lubrication and a decent level of noise dampening. Both have their place oil/grease but grease is much better is this case.

For me I just cleaned the rusted parts off my old vintage ones and slabbed some grease on them boys and man they feel and sound so good!!!!

I perfer using a little bit of grease because it doesn't leak out and attract as much dust and debris wich will end up inside of the ratchet and cause premature wear.

If your ratchet is slipping with any amount of oil on it, it’s time for a new ratchet.

I use a DEHCO Ratchet.. 30 years in service

I clean it out with gasoline and smothering the mechanism with Bearing Grease,

worked for me all these years

Ah, yes, I do this once a year at the same time I check my toilet bolts and replace my garden hose washers...

I did that, but used super glue instead. No more noise to worry about. There's no more wiggling or excessive play. Try it.

I do this at the same time that I rotate my spark plugs, so they wear evenly. Then I calibrate my screwdrivers, just to be sure that they have turned clockwise and anticlockwise the same amount of times.
