Your using the dark arts of psychology. Now I have to buy the video. I’ll never be able to stand up without it.

It totally does! I train at the mma lab in az. All the toughest matches I have are guys from the fight team who always look to get to the single leg to get up rather than play the jujitsu game. It makes everything I do offensively damn near impossible!

The biggest problem I have from standing up from turtle, having transitioned from wrestling to jits, is that there's never any forward pressure from turtle. By the time I defend the attacks, everyone just kinda falls off of turtle and I end up with a reversal.
In jits, unlike in wrestling or mma, people will just fall back and literally pull you on top of them, which is a monumentally stupid idea in any rule set except for a jiujitsu tournament.

I used to train exactly like that with some of my training partners. Goal was to always stand up if you can. And with gi.

Neil Melansons tactical turtle covers some power half counters that start off the same too. Some of Neils stuff are a hidden gem.

Actually, his using a wrestling sit out to shift Spencer’s weight off the back which is equal to a stand up or sake off of your opponent. It call a low sit out. Coach you are correct in your narrative. Excellent break down of using both wrestling and jujitsu!

In wrestling we focus on getting that inside leg out once we get to that forward sit out position. That’s the most important thing. The powerhalf is useless once you get that leg out. He shouldn’t be able to pull you back from that position unless you’re a total scrub.
Also, first escape should be to get that inside elbow between you and “swim” him off. The way homeboy was hanging off the side with that leg in, you wouldn’t need to do the forward sit…he is more than halfway to his own him. The top man needs to ride him like a horse or he will fall off (his powerhalf was the only thing keeping him from falling off)

oh man! this is very similar to priit mihkelson running man position and defense. i love it. check out priit mihkelson if you haven't heard of him. the shaking them off the back and turning into them is an extremely fascinating defense and can turn the tables quickly

The "problem" is that BJJ should never be separated from Judo in the first place. For example there are many takedowns and PINS (to keep you from just standing up). The time for having all of these different grappling arts is over. There is only one grappling art which combines all of the most effective techniques of freestyle wrestling, greco, catch wrestling, sambo, etc etc you get the point. When I first started in BJJ (Im only purple belt), i thought it was funny that there are no take downs. All of the takedowns come from Judo or other martial arts. Then I learned the history of BJJ and realized why this was so, and at the same time how silly it is to limit your move selection to one martial art. Take from greco, take from sumo if you can find something and try it. No matter what don`t be limited. I love college wrestling; so I figured out how to turn single leg takedowns and leg laces into leg locks and knee bars, my own system. That's what this journey is about really. Find what works for your body type and your temperament. Just stand up works until you have a strong wrestler on top holding you down or a Judoka who has strong ground game and Pins. Great video, big fan, and would love to see this in practice from you Craig soon.

I don't think Craig is a better coach than John, but the accent sure helps put him over.

As someone who has met Derrick Lewis I can confirm, he’s really good at standing up.

It’s amazing to have the humility to say you were wrong for 15 years of your life and just say the the marital art you’re so passionate about has a huge fault
