Installing a Coil Shock on my Stumpjumper EVO

The Specialized Stumpjumper EVO is an extremely popular mountain bike, and we're consistently helping our customers with upgrades on these bikes. So I (Mike) built up a Stumpy EVO to ride and better assist customers with their questions. Tons of people ask if a coil shock will increase the performance of their bike, so in this 3 part video series we aim to answer the question "Should I put a coil shock on my Stumpjumper EVO?"

In this first part of the series, I install a coil shock on my Stumpy EVO and go through the process of using a spring calculator and sag measurements to find a "starter spring" for this new coil shock setup.

Subscribe so you don't miss out on Part 2 and 3 where I ride it and review how it feels!

Nice. When I upgraded my stumpjumper I asked the specialized people if a coil shock would be okay to use. The guy that I spoke to with did not advised to do so because it not really designed to be used with a coil shocks. Also, there are stumpjumper owners that have had shocks that snapped. I think it is just how the suspension lay out is of the stumpjumper. With that I picked a DVO topaz and onyx as an upgrade. 😊 Thanks for this helpful video 😊

The strut mount layout is definitely a killer. I was running my air shock at 30% sag (prob too much) on a short travel stumpy and broke the damper shaft on a hard bottom-out.

The most interesting thing I noticed when I did this to mine was the added comfort on long rides. It added damping to all the contact points making the bike feel smoother over any surface.

Would be interested to see you throw the cascade link on there and see if you notice the progression / travel increase

Great news I am following how this story unfolds.

Worth noticing is the first pictures of 2021 Stumpjumper EVO LTD was with coil. Once ready for production the coil was gone.

Huge fan of your work and didn’t know you own the shop. Just want to congratulate your hard work, and I hope your business rises like foam. You deserve it dude.

Early SJ Evo's came with the DHX2 and there were tons of failures. My SJ Evo Pro came with the coil stock, I had 2 rides before mine blew up. Sent it to Fox for warranty service and they advised not to use their coil shocks on this frameset. Replaced with a factory DPX2 at the time and haven't had any issues in the 2 years since and thousands of miles.

can't wait for the second part :) besides the side-to-side stiffness (or lack of it), what about the progression? I have close to zero knowledge there, but I heard multiple times the stumpy suspension design works better with progressive shocks.

I subscribed because your new haircut is pretty good. Also my son and I both love our SJ Evos, they can do pretty much everything as a good compromise.

I can highly recommend the sprindex. It's an adjustable spring, so you can just try different weights. Also you can tune it one fly, mid ride.

Mike has excellent taste. That bike is spec'd PERFECT.

You need a Springdex spring to get you dialed in
I like how I can adjust for weight
Like when I’m carrying a Hydro pack just dial it up a few clicks
Easier than an air shock actually no pump to carry!

Turbo Levo SL Alloy + RockShox SUPER DELUXE ULTIMATE COIL RC2T 210x52, 5 - with HBO. For the exact same reason - Fox Float did not hold up well the side-loads, but this one does (for now), the spring is 600lbs, stroke is exactly 52.5 (as stock Fox Float). Bike 21kg + rider 97kg + backpack 6kg. More flowy trails than jumping - sure - but it seems rigid as f. yet it does take out uwanted bumps well! I am still dialing in all of the settings (pain in the butt). Coil fits near strut arm and leaves 3mm not more.

Really nice video! I'm wondering about the reference list @2:41 as the 2020 Evo TLD Limited was equipped with a FOX DHX2 Performance Elite.

RS SDU Coil MY23 needs much softer spring that any calculator suggest. I weight 85kg and I need 350lbs spring to achive 30% sag (measured seatted) at my Transition Spire. Every calculator suggest 450lbs.

awesome video. i had a dhx on mine until i was talking with spesh and they told me that shock is a no go... so i got sad and sold it thinking it just wasn't compatable with any coil. but this gets me excited again!
