I've started learning to code pretty recently (mainly Java) and I'm from a non English speaking country, we just code in English here.

here in Germany, most programmers also write their comments in English, it just feels more natural

I am German and I basically write all of my code in english and I don't struggle with it. So you don't have to worry about us we can speak english😉

Coding in native languages would be so hilarious for the native coders

I love the fact that all the comments written in a foreign language are in italian, i'm italian and i swear that most of us write comments in english (obviously a bad one)

I'm from Mexico and here you're expected to know at least intermediate English as a programmer

I’m French and I code in English, this is how I learned how to code.

I’ve never thought of this question 😂😂 and all of the French programmers I know work in English as well.

I live in Brazil and most people here don't even consider learning English. I always type my comments in English unless I'm coding for college, where my classmates would have a hard time reading them. They know they have to learn English to grow in the business and talk to people internationally, but they can also just memorize what the keywords do without knowing their meaning.

As a Brazilian developer working in US, I can say that the video is really accurate :) I basically used to write comments and naming variables in Portuguese. Then after some time working I started learning English to understand the key words and docs.

But currently more and more companies in Brazil actually require you to write the entire codebase in English, so people are learning it really earlier when studying programming.

I like to think about Lua when English in programming is the topic. Developed in Brazil at my brother's university, full english syntax. Simply because it is the world's universal language today. And when you do a good thing, you want as many people as possible to enjoy it.

Im a Software Developer from Germany. Most people in Europe speaks English fluently. We write or code in English and also comment in English. I think it’s no problem to understand “if”, ”classes” or “polymorphism”. I also read Robert C Martin, Martin Fowler, Alan Kay…. Don’t worry, we learn English in school

Most of the libraries functions and languages syntaxes are pretty non English fluent speaker friendly ! Even in France, where our English level is terrible we do use english in our Readmes or comments to make the code readable from everywhere. Btw I'm just a CS student yet but In most of the companies, everyone has an english level decent enough to at least read everything.

It’s truly fascinating how universal English is

Here in France, we code in English, and most companies insist that we write our comments in English too.
I think it's by far the best practice that all programmers use the same standard language, and although some might object to the pick of English in particular, it's good for the community that we can all communicate using a common language.

I'm not a native English speaker but I actually find it easier to read and understand if both the comments and the code are written in English rather than a mix between English code and Spanish comments (and / or variable naming).

I love how he uses extra zoomed pic of Golden Temple a.k.a. "Harimandir Sahib" as his background in the intro.
