Short answer: NO, AI is *NOT* replacing software engineering now or any time soon.

AI can write boilerplate, it can solve trivial problems, it can solve leetcode problems, and even these it often screws up.

Throw AI at a real-world software project (case in point, I work on a project with 25 solutions, over 800 projects, hundreds of thousands of files and millions of lines of code) and AI can do absolutely *NOTHING* with that code-base other than ensure it won't compile.

I started to learn c and they said learn c++, I started learning c++ they said learn Java, I started to learn Java, they said learn python, I started learning python, they said learn django then I started learning django they said learn AI, now I am tired. I regret doing engineering.

Software engineers are being replaced by other Software engineers in cheaper countries. Interest rates go up, swe jobs go down.

if it replaces software engineering, it will replace every job as well. So there is no reason to laugh about it lol. Humble yourself before the reality kicks in.

classic skill issue. need to incorporate self heal, reflect procedure in using LLM not just praying single magic prompt would do everything

Would be nice if AI replaces all jobs in the world. Then I can finally start farming without people telling me I should be doing something else. Spend time with family, breathing fresh country air, pretty epic.

Hey Dojo! I am an CSE undergrad, currently in 2nd year. I love to create and build things that can add value to people.
I spent my last sem preparing DSA and Competitive Programming. Now I am looking to start development.

But there are a lot of domains out there. Such as - Web Development, App Development, AI ML, Devops, Cloud Computing, etc.

I am confused what domain should I choose. It seems that some of the domains have got oversaturated and also AI is able to do many of the beginner level tasks.

My Aim is to get an internship at one of the top tech companies. Please can you help me to choose a domain? It would be very helpful!

What do you mean new toolset? I’m sorry but to drill (normal drilling), I can buy tools that could help do a good job at it, but if I get an entire robot that do it for me then I won’t have the joy of doing the job for myself. Look at Japan in the 1990s with the “lost generation” and you’ll see what I’m talking about. At the end, AI is going to create a massive gap for people starting now who in the past years started to learn how to code and apply reinforcement learning on their own to now all of the sudden AI generated code and automation that then people with busy lives now don’t have the time and money (inflation now) to spend to learn as if you were born recently. This is going to benefit those who are born later in the years, those who are going to be experts on CHOP, prompt engineering, etc.

It will never replace software engineering just like calculators haven't replaced math teachers

To assume that AI will never replace software engineers is delusional and putting your head in the sand. My estimate is 2027 - 2030 that this will start happening to a significant degree. In the 2030s it will be rare to find a real software engineer.

At least start preparing a plan B in case it happens. I recommend non-white-collar labor like nursing, electrician or plumbing which requires a dexterous body, which seems much farther away. Construction is also inevitable for a lot of white collar labor.
