Promoting my channel on my social media was one of the worst decisions I've made. So many YouTubers I watched (back when I first started) said to do that, and it made sense. Just because your friends and family subscribe to you doesn't mean they'll contribute to the actual success of your YouTube channel, especially if it's content they don't actually care about. Most of your family members and friends won't subscribe which can feel crappy, but in the end, it's actually good because they know they're not actually interested in your content and they're sparing you. Let those subscribers come on their own, and that's who your real community will be.

My channel is starting to grow and the frustration is now replaced by fear, although each video does better than the previous one, whenever I upload a video I have a constant fear and I look at the analytics almost every minute, when I upload a video the clic through rate and retention are very high, but as hours and days pass they start going down, is that normal? I feel like I'm stuck because i've just had one video that became viral for me and blew up very fast but I haven't had a video like that again

Big mistake: negativity. In a video I made about my new laptop I said "I'm not a review channel, nor do I want to be" one minute in. I noticed a drop in retention right there. It's doing a lot better after I took that part out in the YouTube Editor.

Creating a video is similar to a sales pitch; you only focus on the positive and don't give people a reason to click away.

To everyone reading this, don't give up on your channel.
You got this. With time, you will get to the point you've always aimed for.

Powerful. I got so comfortable past months and my channel DIED. LITERALLY lol Now I am trying to resurrect it and feeling too comfortable is not the way to go!

It feels like growing a channel with the content I do is so hard. Half of the rules of everything your supposed to do on YouTube just can't apply to my videos so I feel like myself (and people like me) struggle a lot with trying to beat the algorithm because you can only edit the videos so good, you can't "make the footage better". I'm really stuck on what to do to try to grow my channel because there are a lot of people who do what I do, but I have no clue how I can get them to watch my video over someone elses, or even get them to see my channel at all. This is a good video, As much as I like it, I'll be removing my intro now.

I didn't watch your channel for years, but I recently discovered it and enjoy it. You offer something much different than the "competitors" that you mentioned. I treat this channel as my continuing education!

Remember: there is a difference between going to another channel for self-promo vs actively participating in comments on channels you frequent. Definitely do the latter! The more you positively interact on your favorite channels, the more likely people will take note and may visit your own channel. Be real. Be genuine.

I like your phrase "if you're stand still your going backwards". I commonly say in the games I play on my channel when you as a player become stagnant, "if you're not growing, you're loosing"

Ironically remember a sentence channel makers had on self promotion that has really stuck with me, on how for youtube success you want to make it as clear as possible to the algorithm who will enjoy your content.

Promoting your videos in places where you may get some of your intended viewers can make sense as a start... (I just recently had success with this posting links to YT videos further explaining topics I briefly covered in a subreddit) but continuing to do so as you grow and youtube gets a good idea of who will enjoy your content is definitely more likely to hurt you in the long run

I agree with everything that you said from experience!

Just like Ricky Bobby says, "if you're not first, you're last!" We have to keep growing our channel through innovation in content and editing. I have a real bad habit of incorporating introduction scenes. I'll be stopping that right now. And I add in cards too. I can easily drop that. It's a hassle anyway. I've heard that putting links to relevant videos mentioned in the video content is a better way to go. Thanks for all of the helpful information. I do like watching Nate over at Channelmakers, btw.

They might be 'alternatives' but I watch all 3 equally and you all have something to offer, re-enforcing some elements, and offering different ways of saying the same thing.

I’m really getting into making these videos and pushing harder than I ever have to move forward! Coming up with fresh new ideas is hard! Maybe the hardest of all! There’s so much to learn too! It’s intense! I went to and graduated from NASCAR TECHNICAL INSTITUTE back in 2005 and the learning curve to repair automobiles was long and hard.. this YouTube thing is a little easier but more fun… most people fail as mechanics and I succeeded so I feel like I will also succeed as a YouTuber! Thanks for this content as it helps me each time I watch!!

This is a great video with a lot of great information, however I have to disagree when it comes to intros. Personally I really like watching people‘s intros if done right, because it gives me an insight into their channel, I talk about a few different topics on my channel and having a quick little snippet of what I talk about helps show people what my channel is about and helps break up the video a little bit in my opinion. I understand why some people may dislike them, but just like end cards, if done right they can be pretty powerful!

This is actually eye opening. Recently because of college I haven’t been able to make videos which hurt a lot. I recently decided to start *trying* to work towards a schedule to balance videos and college. I was looking at my analytics I discovered the very thing you claimed: intros kill watch time. I thought that was amusing. I love all the content you make! One question: could you do a video related to balancing YouTube with College?

I have really noticed how you have changed and improved your intros and seems like the titles lately have been more focused on the home page rather than search!🤔Love those changes

Really eye opening stuff about the card retention 👀. I never thought about the negative aspect of using cards during videos before, definitely going to change my approach to using them during the second half of my videos. Thank you for that perspective.

What a great way to begin my day! Rob and his wisdom! My biggest sin was not understanding how YT worked when I first started my channel. I have been in a situation (at our off grid cabin in the Yukon for the past 4 months with 1 bar of cell) where it has been almost impossible for me to create and upload videos to my channel. (I had a few filmed and have edited and uploaded on trips out to civilization). Meanwhile, I have gone over my older videos and used the YT editor to get rid of the intros I was so proud of back when I started. I also cut out the welcomes and the endings (that signalled the end of the video). I was so silly I even left 10-20 seconds of black screen at the end so I could add the end screens on them. I was such a newbie! lol!

Rob, you are always my go to guy for YouTube advice - snappy, straight forward and coherant! I have seen the other guys you mentioned, but they do not have the same appeal for me as you do! 1 is too gimmicky, 1 is too much information that it gets boring and confusing! Keep doing what youre doing, sir! You're still the best YouTube advice channel out there!
