Differences between S-log2 vs S-log3 | for Sony Mirrorless

Показать описание
A short Comparison between Slog2 vs Slog3, comparing dynamic range, how data is distributed amongst the shadows mid-tones and highlights and how difficult they are to colour grade.
The information in this video apply to all current Sony mirrorless cameras (a7iii a7riii a7siii a6300 a6500 a7ii a7rii a7sii...), but also the fs5 if recording internal 8bit 4k.

As always feel free to ask questions below in the comments!

Great video mate. Broke it down without a lot of BS. Very helpful and to the point!

Bro, this was the most simple technical explanation of these profiles ever! Just the one chart and explaining how/why one records more highlight details etc. was too good.

I’ve been shooting HLG almost exclusively but want to get more into S-LOG, and it seems 2 is going to be the best bet for my a7R III 👍

if S-log3 have more info in shadow&mid-tones, wouldn't it look better with skin (or easier to work with when there is skin)? My experience with S-log2 is that the skin is so tricky to correct. I would say avoid S-log2 when you have people in frame (especially interviews), use S-log2 for landscape/B-roll and S-log3 for whenever you need to get a nice skin tone.

Time is money and you just saved me a lot of money by just giving me the facts I needed to know. Great job!

The curves per-se don't indicate how the camera sensor distributes the information on them. Slog3 has more steps of exposure in highlights, but if the sensor doesn't capture that range it won't use that region, because it will position points narrower on it, using less bit range and putting points closer. Slog2 has more information in shadows because the curve is flatter on the extreme left. I don't have Sony cameras but other people have found more information to recover on shadows and highlights with s-log2. S-log3 is for people used to Cineon profile to have colors easier to grade and the theoretical exposure advantage is for higher-end sony cameras, like Venice, but not seemingly for A7/A6300.

Do you have any recommendations for LUTs for S-Log 2 for Sony mirrorless (a6500 specifically)? Maybe one recommendation for cinematic, music videos etc. and one for good skin tones, blogging etc. Thanks!

Great video!! As a side note, can you do a tutorial on how you produce the graphs used in the video? Thanks, and keep the content coming.

informative video. But may I request you work on your delivery, mate. (voice emoting).

Lost me when you said you should manually grade log using shadows midtones and highlights. You have to transform the color space, not just the gamma.
