I was an illegal immigant. Thanks to DACA now I am able to work so my Bachelor's in nonprofit management which I paid for with merit scholarships did not go to waste. Now I work at a nonprofit helping low income CITIZENS. Yet I bet many of these citizens condemn immigrants like me, not knowing that the man they hugged with tears of joy, thanking him for his help is one of those immigrants.

On a more serious note living in El Paso as a white person in the minority has greatly affected my view of Hispanic culture. It's not uncommon to know people who are undocumented or whose mother is undocumented. The common language in the kitchens of our businesses is Spanish and many people I've worked with are incredibly nice people who are struggling to learn English and provide a living for their families at the same. I felt offended at Trump's "rapists" comment despite not being Hispanic myself because I feel as though I'm part of a very distinctive "El Paso culture" which goes beyond ethnicity. I certainly have more in common with them than Cruz or Trump

Thank you for this video. I conducted much of my undergrad research on this issue, and this video is perfect.

Thank you David. As a student of economics, I've actually written some papers on this ridiculous argument. It holds very little water and in fact, our illegal immigration actually creates jobs for US citizens. This is a fact because if it weren't for illegal immigration many businesses wouldn't be able to operate at all. Very few businesses hire only illegal immigrants and therefore the jobs they give to US citizens would also be gone if they couldn't hire illegals. I don't like the way illegals are treated here and the low wages they are forced to take, but to say that illegals take jobs from US citizens is just false.

That awkward moment when half the comments raise points that were torn down in the video.
Really like where this show is going. This sort of critical analysis should expand your viewership.

On another note I do very much like these longer videos you've been publishing recently.

"Nativists" That term makes me want to laugh. Where's their love for the real natives?

I hear people complaining incessantly about the high prices of food right now. Do they not realize (I know, dumb question) how much our food would cost if not for the hard working people doing back-breaking work for the most minimal pay? How much will it cost to make those crispy Brussel sprouts if the farmer has to pay $15/hr to someone to work in the field, in the hot sun? That is IF the farmer could get someone to work in the field for even $15/hr. My strongest point with people is the immigrants are NOT using our social safety nets, other than maybe hospitals. They file taxes, but undocumented immigrants cannot receive any refunds; they pay SS taxes and Medicare taxes, but they will never draw a penny from them. On top of the fact they have to be here LEGALLY for 10 years in order to receive any safety net benefits. David you have provided me with a lot of good information to add to my debate arsenal Thank-you.

Automation is the elephant in the room on this topic. Everyone talks about immigrants "taking jobs" but nobody talks about advancements in technology. Advancements in technology make it so fewer people can do more.

Crime statistics coming out of El Paso are spotty at best. Seemingly manipulated. That city has a major crime problem.

I don't think Trump has told one truth as a Presidential candidate.

The sign makes me think of that South Park episode, "They took our jobs".

Why can't everyone just accept these illegal immigrants they and their families (now mostly citizens ) are not going away. Some have been here 50+ years and yes they do pay taxes and don't get any benefits from their job and also to be brutally honest I believe they work jobs for people that don't want them. Also wouldn't you think if we allowed them to legally work that maybe employers will just start to hire qualified people and not low income people.

And let's not forget that every single immigrant would be afforded a hearing in court. How long would that take?

Very well put and said David. This is not going to end well for Americans if trump is elected or any republican for that matter. Bernie 2016 #feelthebern

The picture of the sign with the family silhouette is actually real. I live in the area. They're all on HWY interstate 5 between Orange and San Diego counties. I haven't paid attention to them lately so I'm not sure if they're still the same but most of those signs had an additional sign underneath it with the spanish word "proibido" which means prohibited. So for english speakers it meant caution but for spanish speakers it meant prohibited. It gave the sign that added, biased connotation. I always thought those were the funniest looking signs and even remember stopping to take a picture of one about 10 years ago. What makes the signs so silly and useless is that that part of HWY 5 that they're on is a north/south bound freeway that also has a check point where (even though it's about 100 miles north of the mexican boarder) boarder patrol personnel stop and ask motorists a few questions and pull any questionable "illegals" over to the side of the road for further interrogation. Oh, back to the signs. What makes them so useless (other than to seem disrespectful to the spanish speaking community while satisfying republican political pandering) is that, again HWY 5 runs north and south. Who would want to physicaly run across a north/south bound highway there? There isn't any good reason too. Keep in mind that "there" is located in a marine base, Camp Pendleton. Those signs are located only through the stretch of highway that traverses a military base. I would like to see the actual number of "on foot" immigrants that are seen or caught crossing that highway or anywhere close to that area because it doesn't make any sense to risk walking around inside a military base and even less sense to want to cross east/west through busy HWY traffic. Besides, if you were an immigrant on one side of the HWY, you'd stay on what ever side you were already on an travel north or south, not east/west. I've never heard anyone ever say they'd seen anyone cross there, let alone a male and female couple dragging a small child through the air like in the silhouette lol.
