When I asked my Finnish, Swedish and Italian friends, with 5, 00 euros, if we should go on a tourist trip to the beaches of Rio de Janeiro in 2023, the combined answers were “NEVER”! One of my Swedish friends told me that the “cariocas” are very friendly, but the percentage of thieves is much higher than the friendliness of the “cariocas”, so I will never go to Rio. We talked about other Brazilian regions and my Italian friend suggested the idea to get to know the South of Brazil, such as Paraná, with its beautiful Iguaçu Falls, Curitiba, as the most imposing advanced city in Brazil and the Germanic cultures of Santa Catarina in German and Italian gastronomy, with its European Germanic traditions and Rio Grande do Sul, the city of Italian and German wines, all with cultural diversities, since the 19th century,
with the encouragement of European immigration by D. Pedro II of Brazil, introduced European traditions with beautiful landscapes and corners and in this region there is no talk of robberies and criminals trying to rob you. When we heard this from this Swedish friend, we said:Wow! This is our adventure paradise!

My wife and I are both senior citizens and have been to Brazil 5 times and have never felt unsafe. Use common sense. Know where you are going, don't wear bling, and don't walk around with notebooks or expensive cameras

This is silly. Brazil is a massive country with many, many different cities and towns. Most of the crime is focused in Fortaleza, Salvador, Rio and SP.

Try going to Ouro Preto… or Jeri… or Floripa… or Blumenau… or Curitiba… or Minas Gerais… or Belo Horizonte… I’m sure you’ll get different answers from people.

If you go to the USA and interview people from downtown Chicago, NYC or LA I’m sure that they’ll tell you that it’s dangerous as hell too.

Beware with criminals in Rio de Janeiro. You are tourists, you become easy targets. Rio de Janeiro is the most dangerous city in Brazil. When visiting Rio de Janeiro, do not wear expensive jewelry, watches, designer sunglasses and do not carry your cell phone in your hands. Wear simple clothing, such as shorts and green and yellow t-shirts. Look as little like foreign tourists as possible.
I'm Finnish and I was robbed twice in Rio. The first time, they stole my credit cards and withdrew more than 1500 euros. The second time, they stole my wallet, my Giorgio Armani glasses, my iPhone and my Rolex wristwatch. When I visit Brazil, I prefer the Pantanal Region and the southern region of Brazil. There, I was never robbed in this area!

I got robbed twice in Brazil. The first time was in front of my house, when I was arriving from college in São Paulo. The second time was in front of a police station in Curitiba, the thieves came with a gun and they said they don't care about police. Very sad.

Always depends on area and city you live in

I recently visited Brazil and spent 5 weeks there with my Brazilian husband. We were in Rio and I felt safe and it was a wonderful trip. It really all depends what area you are in. And yes, it’s still important to be aware of your surroundings.

That notebook experiment is the worst i've seen a while. 😂😂 It can happen anywhere in the world.

I've lived in Brazil for over 10 years, and I have a terrible experience. I've been robbed more than 3 times, my family has been kidnapped (they only stole money and didn't get hurt, luckily). There was a time when my colleague didn't return money I lent, and when I asked them about it, they got angry. What's worse is that many criminals use their money to buy drugs. I've heard of a case where an elderly man lost all his belongings, including documents, because of a robbery and is now living on the street. I became a YouTuber to show the reality of Brazil to poor immigrants who are arriving here

Moro no Canadá, e tentaram roubar minha casa. Nunca fui assaltada no Brasil. Ridículo esse video.

I live in Europe but have family in São Paulo, Brazil. I never got robbed, but I witnessed some people getting robbed, a guy getting stabbed in the metro and a lot of crazy crackheads. I don‘t feel safe in my grandmas hood. My aubt lives in another part of the city where I feel kind of safe at daytime. And some gousins or mine live on the coast near Santos There I feel safe. The craziest city I‘ve visited so far was Maceió. Safety is a concern, but it heavily depends on the area. However, in big cities such as São Paulo or Rio it‘s tricky because you can have the craziest favela and rich people on the other side of the street.

I lived in SP for two years and I didn't get robbed once, but everyone I spoke to had a story of them getting robbed. Maybe I was just lucky?

the notebook experiment is the dumbest thing I've seen. I live in Toronto, Canada (supposedly one of the safest cities in the world) and that notebook would be stolen in less than 2 minutes here. I'm not saying Brazil does not have it's issues with crime as most big cities do, but the media there would make you think if you leave your house, you're bound to be victimized. Quite the exaggeration if you ask me, and I go to Brazil all the time.
