Some of the coolest sounding riffs are those based upon “double picking” technique. When you get them down and you can play them smoothly, not only will you enjoy them, but just playing them is a great exercise. They promote accuracy and the momentum helps improve picking speed, precision, and control.
In this lesson I’m going to show you an “Am” riff that uses one of the best ways to create sustained picking effect. This riff expands on a fundamental technique for building speed with precision through alternate /double picking.
What’s really cool about this riff is how it helps you improve picking technique. Steady double-picking technique is commonly heard in music styles where a faster more repetitive sound is what you’re after.
However, be warned that achieving all of this in a smooth and perfect performance will take practice. The examples I’ve composed for today’s lesson are not only focused on helping you develop this sound, (and the technique behind it), but they have also been designed to be fun while practicing.
The lesson starts by introducing an easy backing-track riff, (heard on the MP3 jam-loop from this lesson’s Patreon download). The second half of the lesson moves on to a fresh overlay riff with slightly more challenging phrases. All riffs can be practiced over the MP3 jam-loop audio track.
