I was butting heads with a student (7th grade) at start of year; she wouldn’t stop talking. Sat with her at recess just to chat; told her that I really liked her personality and praised her for being a good student, but told her that she was letting this behavior/slight attitude overshadow her good attributes. Then we just chatted and I got to know her. She talked less after that and when she slipped up, her attitude toward my redirection was better. And we were building a relationship! Do not under estimate the power of connecting with students.

Sadly it wasn’t until the end of the year that I found something that worked with one of my problem children. I told him he wasn’t in trouble but I needed him to come to the front of the room. When he did, I gave him my notes and power point clicker and told him he was teaching the rest of the period. He likes attention, so this actually worked. I’ll definitely keep that one in my toolbox for next year.

This is amazing. I realized I'm often talking at students and telling them to get outside and wait for me in the hall and it usually becomes a power struggle. By asking what I did wrong, it completely changes the situation and I'm sure takes a lot of stress off of the teacher. This information is gold!

Hey, brother, I just wanted to give a shout out to you. You are innovative, passionate, and a phenomenal educator. I have watched four of your videos over the past 3 hours, and they are making me totally rethink my teaching. And I have taught since 2003! You are amazing. I would love to create videos like this one day. Keep sharing, keep vlogging, and keep up the passion.

One classroom management strategy to add for followers is from a presenter named Jack Berkemeier (sp?) that I heard years ago. It actually works! When the whole room is not paying attention, approach the white board at the front of the room and say, "Oh, Mr. White Board, at least you will listen to me! Thanks so much for not talking while I am teaching. I can always count on you, Mr. White Board." Your students will stare at you, and you might be taken as insane, but hey ... you got their attention, right? Works every time. Well, most of the time. :-)

You really helped by reiterating that my race is not lost! Until then I feared it was too late. I recently started working in a women's prison with addicts, and although I've run groups before this has had additional challenges. The amount of disruption and lack of respect for my class time has been my biggest obstacle. Being furloughed during this pandemic I decided I could learn more ways to help me with this. I appreciate your help and your personality is just darling.

My first "senior class teaching" went super disastrous 😭😭😭 I literally could not handle those gigantic (6ft) high school students. Teaching juniors 😍😍😍 is quite different from teaching seniors😢😢😢.

My routine: Prepare lessons all afternoon and night, have deadliest nightmares, vomit right after waking up, see the students in school and get more nervous, worst of all not being able to deliver what I prepared the whole night as a pro ☹

But I must tell you, seeing you makes me want to go back to high school and do the very BEST as a teacher!!! Because I know I can!!! 😊

Thank you VERY VERY MUCH for making such helpful videos 👌👌👌❣❣❣

You are simply awesome and you get it. I don't know what your school's demographics are and where you are located but I know your approaches will work in most all urban schools even in the most challenging areas. Your approaches will also work in others-it is about respect and as you said, "relationships with kids." As a seasoned educator (over 25 years), I rarely had classroom issues because I was authentic just as you appear to be and I tried to build relationships with my students. You know you are on track if former students still want to connect with you once they are grown and on their own.

Your tips are great, I’m retired but sub 2 or 3 days a week. I go into classrooms and nearly always do not know any students names nor what their regular teachers classroom management is. Every once in a while I don’t even have a lesson plan so I have to wing it.

Ugh, so good. These are things I learned in teacher school, but the stress of everyday teaching has cause me to lose my patience, and unfortunately lose my cool in a lot of situations. I’ve been in that power struggle too many times this latter portion of the year as I’ve lost patience for having those personal one-on-one conversations. I need to get back to that. And I’m so hopeful to implement more consistency in my expectations from day one next year!

I love your videos CJ. I teach high school myself- can you make a video about what you do on the first day/week with new students? How you go over your rules and expectations, how you start off your year with them, etc. I would that!

Hello, just got my first job teaching group piano lessons to 5-12 year olds as an after school program. I am a musician and didn’t have a lot of classroom experience but was able to land the job. Your videos have helped me greatly. On my second day, a group of 5-6 year olds took one look at me and then complete chaos happened, because I LET IT HAPPEN. I am teaching that same class again this to use some of your tips ! Thanks - John

I was a paraprofessional last year then I went out on faith and Im a second grade teacher this year. Im nervous because classroom management was hard for me and I could never get it right. With this being my first year I know that i can build relationships because it wasn't hard for me last year. It was when I mean business it was like i was playing with them. I even went to a workshop on classroom management and I learned alot but I still had some areas of classroom management that were showing through the cracks.

Ive just turned down an English teaching position at a public high school. I’ve taught adults for over 20 years, including ESL. I’ve realized that after working at the college level, I wouldn’t be a good fit to deal with disrespectful teenagers, especially nowadays. Thanks for your tips though. Best
