Stop trying to control your students, give them choices

Classroom management is about offering students choices, not about forcing them to do what you want.

If it becomes a battle of wills, it will sap your strength and make teaching a nightmare.
Instead give students options so that they choose what they want to do.

Either they do the work which is great, or they misbehave and get punished.

It is not a situation of you versus them. You only enforce the rules, they decide what they want to do.

I had most students decline to participate in the assignment and instead they took the option of telling me to piss off, threw a party in the classroom, and then complained that I had not told them the instructions when I read the one sentence instructions which were on the projector and typed for them at the top of the page. I also prepared step-by-step slides explaining in detail how to complete the rather simple and straightforward assignment.

School should be an option. If they don’t want to participate in the classroom, let them work unskilled labor in a factory or other outdoor space, cleaning up the roadway or such, so they can se the option of not learning in school.

Yeah... because it's our job to raise them, not their parents. A student who THINKS they have some kind of choice in what they will and won't do at school has parents who have made them think that.

When I was going to school I had to do whatever work my teachers put in front of me! Whether or not I "liked" the work. It wasn't about my feelings, it was about my education. And through that I learned that life isn't always a bed of roses and sometimes you have to do something because it must be done and it will benefit you (and/or others) in the long run.

If my parents found out I refused to do perfectly reasonable school work, they'd be repercussions for me! But that's not how it is anymore.

I've had to use that choice tactic before, but we shouldn't have to and it doesn't always work. Especially with kids who's parents act like their child is an angel. My teachers never needed to use such methods on me. But I was born in the 1900s...

All student are not the same but really bad students will regret not having taken their teachers advice.

This is not applicable to all… What if the student is disruptive and loud. You can’t just leave him that way because it his choice😢

How do you handle a class full of 3 year olds climbing on tables, throwing your flashcards you laid out, screaming, running, pulling on your clothes, biting your clothes, trying to remove your socks as you are teaching and just generally bring chaotic??? Coz I'm out of ideas

This was my approach to all students and I provided incentives that were tailored to each student. Worked every single time. Never had to send one student to the principals office in 15 years. Classroom management skills are critical in managing levels of emotion in the classroom. If you create an inviting, fun, friendly environment rarely will you have an issue. Consistency and patterns are very important.

My statement is excluding students who have diagnosed behavioral IEP's: however I never had to send any students with known behavioral issues to the office either. Communicating with the parents is key.

Yep, today I asked a student if he wanted to speak on front of the class like the rest did for an activity. He refused. I said, "ok, I can't force you to do anything you don't want" and left it at that. It's his choice, but it will come out of his participation grade.

Classroom management is a born skill- it’s hard to teach or learn. I will say it’s archived when kids fear but respect a teacher, feel respected by & like the teacher (most of the time)

I once worked with a brand new, first year Teacher (she was in Teach for America) in a very inner NYC school. She was one of the best I ever saw & Right off she had management of the room & was better at it than people w years experience.

Example: a pupil refuses to change his seat after being disruptive, and ignoring the first warning.
What to do?! Let him have this choice of staying? You’ll lose leadership

Educators give what they have. If the message says don't battle against someone, then it means don't battle against yourself. Be confident and give confidence. Use CBT and support students in learning how to be their own free thinkers. Life shatters us all, so let them see others go beyond the grade and focus on their progress.

I don't agree...Schools are for learning. These students who don't listen disturb the class and create chaos. I was a student too you know and I haaated it when my tracher spent the class time disciplining the child.or the opposite the child disturbing us. A lot of kids go to school to learn, believe it or not ..NOT to witness an out of control spoiled child throwing tantrums when things don't go their way. Giving options should be at home :You either go to school and respect everyone's time OR stay home and watch TV and be a useless human being!

Let the student battle with his own demons of procastination, totally right! Excellent video Eric, good luck in your classes, glad to see you in school again at last.

Today, schools seem to be recreational and entertainment centers, trying to do the impossible to get students to fulfill their assignments. Teachers are neglectfully tolerating and correcting bad behaviors, failing to realise that's not the true role of an educator or instructor.
Students' personalities are shaped by various factors, including their upbringing and environment, which can sometimes lead to maladjustment. Unfortunately, the classroom can mirror and reinforce detrimental societal attitudes and behaviors.

Indeed we should battle against students. Keep it up teacher.

This is great as far as it goes and would probably work well if we were dealing with just one student at a time. Unfortunately, the issue is that the student that is off task and not working usually takes down other students with them which I will not accept. I would rather remove the student who is not engaging with the content so that other students can. This does not have to be a battle of Wells, but if they exhaust their chances to do the work, then they need to be excluded so that others can learn.

Options such as "Would you like to choose the option of not being disruptive and interfering with the learning of everyone else in the room?" Why didn't I think of that genius approach?
