On May 30, 1993, a weekend adventure to the caves of Kentucky’s Cave City took a tragic turn for 29-year-old William J. Coughlin. Accompanied by friends James Jakala and Kevin Feeley, William’s day began with the yearn to explore. However, an off the cuff decision to explore one of the more challenging routes available at Buzzard Roost Cave would ultimately lead him into an unimaginable situation, one that would test his endurance and leave him fatally trapped deep within the cave’s winding passages. How did a simple day of adventure turn into such a horrific ordeal, let’s talk about it. This is the death of William J. Coughlin

I really appreciate that you don't drag the stories out to 30 minutes and add a 6 minute sponsor read.

Between Disasterthon and Mr Ballen, I have decided that I can live my entire life without ever going into a cave.

my husband sometimes tries to convince me to go caving, and my response is always the same "no fkn way!" lol

I will never understand some people’s need to go into caves and crawl through tight spaces. Just the thought panics me!

This case made me so sick to my stomach. I really did get the sense that he probably did trust that the guide would be able to keep him safe. That must have been an unimaginably terrifying way to die.

6'0 and 200lbs and he's trying to squeeze all that down a narrowing cave system? I'm almost half his size and even I would never dream of cave diving to this degree.

Sounds like a lot of people stuffed up here.
The tour guide who left to take a phone call for several hours, the friend who may or may not have said, "Hey dude, don't do that till our guide gets back. You're inexperienced and remember how you got stuck twice already, " and not least the inexperienced guy who had got stuck twice already and decided that going ahead unsupervised was a good idea 😬

This is my nightmare. Can't believe people do that for fun, in such tight and small spaces that is.

Absolutely nice to hear a human voice, you can hear empathy while you tell the story! So different compared to a AI emotionless voice telling a sad story.

Why would that company let completely inexperienced people go on a difficult only for experienced cavers run? Yes it was negligence on their part! Not to mention a 6” tall 200lb. Man? I am glad the courts sided with his family!

Thank you for all your hard work Disasterthon! 😊❤ Happy Halloween 🎃 👻

I don't think any cave disaster will ever be as bad as the John Jones case. That was truly horrific

Did you say he got stuck several times…but kept going??? Yea this could have been prevented several times, then.

To each their own, but I'll never understand the compulsion some folks feel for worming their way through constricted underground passages. The thought of doing that fills me with dread.

Dropping a like and comment on this one but I'll have to skip listening. Cave stories are the only ones I have a hard time listening to. Appreciate the time and effort you put into your videos!

Sure, the guide wandered off for an extended period of time. But to that, I present the question of, "Why the hell didn't they wait for his return?" Especially since the story even mentions how the guy had gotten stuck several times, so there's no longer even a precedence for not understanding the risks in motivating them to wait, since he'd already had to overcome them several times just reaching that point.

I will never understand the appeal of crawling around through confined underground passages.
