So for those who dont know, they did not chicken out, the 4 who left had only gone down as far as planned for a cave trip, and the other six had decided to do further mappping and caving for the day.

To say they chickened out is kind of insulting to the people who survived. I lived in Dayton Ohio and a few years ago my fiancé was almost carjacked, we called the cops. They then told us there was nothing they could do. A week later those same teens busted my back windshield. Cops were called got the whole thing on the house cameras. The cops even knew who they were and said "sorry there is nothing we can do, hopefully you have coverage". I then told my fiancé I think we are being targeted and said we needed to move. We pleaded with the cops to do something, they were causing issues all around town, trying to steal cars, robbing people, breaking and entering. They still did nothing, we then move out, about a month later those SAME teens killed a Lyft driver on the west side of Dayton after holding a gun to a woman's head as she stopped at a red light and stealing her car. As a survivor of this whole ordeal, me and my fiancé hold something called "survivors guilt". Even though it clearly wasn't our fault we still hold guilt for it. That man lost his life, he had a wife and a child. It is wrong to say something so bold as this as we don't know what those people went through, and what they may have felt after the fact. Sometimes you don't even need to be directly involved, sometimes knowing something tragic happened at that place after you've left is enough to make you feel some sort of guilt. I know it may seem stupid to others, but unless you've dealt with "survivors guilt" it may look weird from the outside.

Never ignore your instincts, In high risk activities, fear is not a test of courage, You have your whole life to come back more equipped/prepared. Better to go home without experiencing things than never going home at all, always remember that "there will always be a next time".
