AC Line Freezing Up? Here is WHY!

preview_player

There are many reasons why the blower will freeze up. Typically the too 3 are... Dirty filter, low freon refrigerant... or in this case a bad blower motor. This is a step by step video showing you how to troubleshoot and replace the furnace blower motor.

I have been a technician all my life, and have worked on everything from cars to natural gas compression units. It's nice to find a youtuber who actually gives useful information in a logical manner, many techs just gloss over the topic. Safety is ALWAYS taught first. Good job!!

I have watched more than 25 videos on fixing AC's and misc items this past few days and this guy is far the best at describing what he is doing as well as what needs to be done. Great job at producing this video!!!

Great informative video! Over the years I have troubleshot and repaired air conditioning and heat issues instead of calling an HVAC technician. As a homeowner it makes you feel good and saves money!

Well done video!! you take the time to explain in detail and show everything step by step. I've worked in refrigeration in the past and only wished I had someone like you to explain to me the proper way to do things, I would of probably been still working in the field. Sam you are a true refrigeration technician 👍

Excellent video, great explanation, concise and to the point. I wish most HVAC videos posted have promoted professional installations and details as described in this video.
Also, if I may suggest, adding up to the list of possible causes for suction line freeze up beside the common blower motor/relay failure is the possibility of condenser contactor contacts welded together due to excessive contact pitting. I thought this may be somewhat helpful to your viewers as well. Luckily, I have equipped my system with a custom freeze up alarm that woke me up at 3 AM and let me know that my condenser was running while the thermostat has cut off, and it prevented ice up and compressor flooding. The best $12 investment ever made. Thanks again for your inspiring video.
BTW: I have used pressure washer for the blower fan assembly cleanups in the past with great results, followed by lubricating the OLD motor bearings (if it is functional). This greatly extends the motor sleeve bearings life expectancy. I am certain that you are well aware of this, but included here for average DIY home owner audience. Best wishes and look forward to your next posting.

It’s usually the bad capacitor that caused rotor lock that cooked the crap out of the blower motor or compressor. If people catch the buzzing sound and shut the system down promptly, you may be able to save the motor. We all were trained to test these caps, but we only were trained that is the sole measurement. That’s a mistake. If the unit is 10 years or older, I swap out the split caps and also the run caps as capacitors due degrade over time and are $15 to $25 cheap assurances to a more reliable system and happy Client. I also change the Contactor’s at 10 years as well. I am in the Midwest. Perhaps in the sun belt this should be every 4 or 5 years.

The fact is 50% of all no a/c service calls are bad caps. They often mushroom, which is a high voltage failure. Your 9volt MFD meter can’t simulate high voltage breakdowns. Keep in mind a capacitor has two conductive plates separated by a thin non-conductor. Think of it like two pieces of aluminum foil separated by Seran Wrap. When a motor stops, it throws back an inductive charge which can be as high as 2.5 times its run voltage. These can cause pin hole pock marks. Eventually, these short through and the cap fails in an instant. Some people claim caps fry in lighting, which is possible and a fast death. All new systems I sell the SIEMENS SurgeGuard. I do not sell it as a whole house protector as advertised. What I like about it is when it fails, it beeps, so it can be replaced.

I explain, it’s time to switch out the capacitors and old contactor, which helps save your system from the most common sudden failures. Its rare that people say no. If I have resistance, I say “this is what I do in my home, my Mom’s home, it’s wise if you can afford this now”. I am careful not to be pushy or disrespect a persons financial capabilities - I can never speak for another’s wallet kind of thing. If the unit is clean, I offer Emerson’s White Rogers’s SureSwitch as “a more preferred alternate that may help preserve the compressor”...

If you watch some videos on the SureSwitch, there is brown out protection which random timing delays on start up so too many loads at once is avoided, delayed restart and it also shuts off at zero-voltage which happens at the sign wave as it passes center just before and after a 60 hertz AC power cycle. That the perfect no arc state.

When swapping capacitors (or any component) I date or tag the part with a magic marker and my initials. I also add “Prev. Mait” to indicate preventative maintenance.

The final results are a happier Client, fewer service calls, more sales per ticket. I lightly hint that I prefer to be proactive to do what we can upfront to help prevent more expensive failures. If I can help any of your neighbors or friends, here are some of my business cards. I always give 6 or 8 cards to every Client. I call them Clients as I expect to have them for life - I serve their best interest first. The net results is I have a stable network of Clients that are happy to recommend you. With the nationwide lack of extra techs these days, I see this preventative maintenance plan method of service to be the more efficient model. I make a bit more upfront and I do have more time to enjoy life too.

Obviously we have all experienced some bad attitude customers. These folks are not Clients nor do I encourage a relationship. Everyone will get more crabby with no a/c and that’s ok. It’s about staying positive. I have two box fans in the truck - for the elderly, I have gone by the gas station on the way over and get a 7lb bag of ice and put in a pan for the Client in front of the fan while I am working on the system. So far I have only been called a Saint. I never charge for the ice. That is called compassion.

Your video popped up on my feed and decided to watch. You were spot on I had a guy come over and as soon as he heard the humming knew what was wrong. The only difference is my AC fan doesn't have a capacitor and connects straight to the relay.
