I've always loved asymmetrical hull forms which makes so much sense as you drive the size constraints down. I like the thwart modification. Try ing to get sail performance out of small canoes is a challenge at the best of times. I think the simplicity of the pack canoe lends itself to keeping the sail rig as simple as possible too.

You can always count on Cape Falcon Kayaks to advance the art, and make great videos. Thank you for making nice comments about our similarly named paddle sport business / Falcon Sails. As soon as I have the time, I am going to buy a lesson package and go for it. I am sure it will be a great learning experience, and result in a amazing new boat. Cape Falcon Kayak's does an amazing job of combining the old school skin on frame art, with a lot of out of the box advancements. Cape Falcon Kayaks, knows how to make a well done video. Make sure you subscribe to this channel so you learn from the best.

Thanks, Brian, for the update. I'm eager to see how the asymmetrical design and the new removable thwart works out in your test paddles.

Actualy the Flat Sail you where using befor just needs very slight modification to work like a proper Sail. The shape is called spritsail and is in use since roman times.

Take a look at the boot "the sailmakers aprentice".

The entire time I'm watching this video, and marveling at your ingenuity, I'm wondering if I can apply this technique to building the St. Lawrence Skiff I've got plans for (I've conversed with you about this in the past).  Then you said that's exactly what you wanted to build next!  I will be watching with keen intent, especially how you handle the added stress of rowing.

Using only a small amount of extra complexity, you could add a second thwart toward the bow to attach the sheet. This would give you fore and after flexibility for the sheet as well as allow better control over how flat to make the sail for better pointing.

... and let’s also have a small mizzen sail in the stern 😃😃😃

Great common-sense explanations. Really enjoying hearing your thoughts and experiences - it’s put me in mind to persuade myself to build my own boat. I was going to ask about building a half size of model boat, but you do mention that it is a lot more difficult.
