“Calorie” is a word that all of us have heard about it all the time. How many calories are in this cake? How many calories are in this apple? How many calories are burned by my activities and exercises?
Have you ever thought about what a calorie really is? Do you know how much of them your body needs? Is the amount of calories different for men and women?
What is a calorie?
A calorie has been defined as a unit of energy. Historically, scientists referred to the word calorie to mean a unit of energy that has come from a source of energy like coal and gas. But current opinion in the nutritional sense believes that all types of food such as fat, protein, carbs, and sugars are also important sources of calories. And as you know the body needs calories to live and function.
In physics, calorie refers to the amount of heat that is required to increase the temperature of 1 gram of water like 15 degrees Celsius to 16. But in nutrition “a calorie” is 1000 of these small calories. Some researchers might also use the word kilocalories instead of calorie for nutritional contexts. There are other names that can be used for this purpose such as dietary calories, nutritional calories, food calories, and Calories with a capital C.
So, calories are the way our body keeps the energy budget. A healthy balance of calories is when we put in calories, about as much energy as we lose. If we always put more energy into our bodies than we burn, this excess energy will gradually be stored as fats in our cells and we gain weight. Otherwise, if we burn more calories than we intake, we lose weight. So, we have to measure the energy we consume daily in order to stay healthy and fit, and we do this process with a unit named calorie.
So, as we mentioned earlier, no matter what types of food we eat, everything we consume has calories which tells us how much energy this food can provide for the body. For instance, one apple has about 60 calories, or 100 grams of cookie has 502 calories. This amount shows how much energy is released during the digestion tract to be stored in other molecules. Then our body has broken down these molecules to provide energy when it is required for the body.
Where do these calories go?
After we consume a portion of food; we use its energy in three different ways. First, about 10 percent of it enables digestion. Second, about 20 percent flues physical activity, and the biggest chunk that is around 70 percent support the basic functions of the body for daily activities, organs, and tissues. The metabolic rate is highly dependent on the third usage. Actually, the number of calories we need to be alive and survive has shaped our basal metabolic rate.
How many calories are needed for each person?
The average amount of calories required for every person is different depending on many factors such as genetics, weight, daily physical activity, muscle mass, and more. But generally, it has been considered that 2000 calories are needed for women and 2500 calories are needed for men. There is a conventional opinion that claims men shouldn’t eat less than 1500 and women 1200 to ensure that they are getting a balanced healthy amount of calories and nutrients.
So, does that mean everyone should consume around 2000 calories? Not necessarily!
As we mentioned earlier, is it highly dependent on many factors?
If you do an energy-guzzling activity such as jumping jacks, cycling, swimming, and etc, surely you will need more calories because you are burning more calories.
Pregnant women require slightly more calories than usual, and when we get older, the metabolic rate decreases. So, typically elderly people need fewer calories each day because energy is burning gradually in their bodies.
Are you the kind of people who count their daily calories? Do you think is it important to know the number of calories of every food we consume?
