Major Problem with Windows 10 2004 Update

Windows 10 2004 Bug Defrags SSD Drives Too Often. So you rolled out to Windows 10 2004 update early? Well, there has been a major bug found in that update with Windows 10 2004 optimization and defrag bug. This Windows 10 Update Bug may cause continuous defragging of SSDs or NVME. Microsoft defrag is designed to perform weekly or monthly optimization, after each optimization, the system records the current optimization time. The problem with Windows 10 2004 update is that it attempts to perform automatic optimization operations on the drive every time the computer is restarted and turned on. This is not good for SSDs as they don't need optimizations such as defragmentation. They use TRIM technology. Defragging an SSD can add wear and tear and shorten the life of the SSD.

Microsoft: Using all PC users worldwide as update beta testers since...well, ever.

You keep saying: “until it’s officially released”. By the time any user can download it and install it through windows Update, it is offically released. Yes, one needs to manually check for updates, but that’s not an indication that it’s just a beta or whatever. So it should be relatively risk-free. The fact that it isn’t (for some people) is down to Microsoft, not the person who downloads and installs it. You have to put the responsibility where it belongs.. which is not the user in this case, but Microsoft.

I am within the 10 day window but I have chosen to remove the c: drive from optimisation rather than rollback.

It's not running a "Defrag" everytime. It reports Defrag in the event viewer because Trim runs from the same module. Its running Trim which does not hurt you SSD. But your right it should not be running it that often.

I know it's a complicated system but defragging an SSD FFS!!!!

TRIM is NOT the same as defrag. It is a command sent to the drive to mark empty sectors. This will actually prevent pages from being erased/copied, and as a matter of fact has a slight positive lifespan effect for the drive.

Lmao :D Opening event viewer in Windows is like opening can of worms.

I this kind of reminds me of the James Bond film ‘Tomorrow never dies’ where the Chief baddie played by Johnathan Pryce is talking to his cronies over a video like & the lackey who deals with IT tells him that they’ve released a computer platform that’s ‘FULL of bugs’ and Pryce says (and I’m paraphrasing here)
“Excellent, they’ll be forced to upgrade for years”.

Daym! I'm glad this popped up in my recommendations. I'm one of the early adopters of 2004

20-second unskippable ad followed by another 20-second skippable before I can watch anything is becoming a huge pain on YouTube channels.

Seems like every time when there's a windows 10 update there's always a problem

You gotta love Microsoft. They've gone from deleting user files from the Documents (and others) folder trees in a previous update to just downright screwing up your SSD and making you lose everything if you don't check your settings. Bravo Microsoft. What's next on the ideas board? Finding a way to actually blow up a uses computer?

Stuff like this is why Windows 7 should not have had its support ended.

This is majorly misleading.
Windows does not defrag SSDs.
Trimming has no negative impact on lifespan and is done in a few seconds, it won't slow down your system or hurt the drive no matter how often it is run.

The event viewer lists both trim and defrag under the defrag source, and even if it issues defrag commands to a SSD or trim to a HDD, it will not actually do anything. Furthermore, it runs to schedule for each partition, so the amount is not excessive. This is a clear misunderstanding of the event viewer and on the same level as these people that think they have a virus because a scammer showed them how many errors there are in the event viewer.

The only bug here is that it doesn't remember if it already trimmed, but it still won't run more often than the schedule tells it
