In this situation I ask him to repeat again and I don't pay attention again 😂

Too busy focusing on my mad paying attention skills to actually pay any attention to you.

one of my copes is to interject or interrupt, but I'm really just trying to verbally participate so that I can pay attention better

*As Homer Simpson would say:*
"What was all the stuff you said about the things?"

My internal voice is more like, ‘okay, listening. I got this, got this…hmm, which eye do I look at, the left?…..the right?….both? Which eye do other people look at? Do people look at both eyes? Do I look like I’m staring? I’m too close to look at both. Should I back up? Am I staring? I’ll just look down. And nod. Nodding is good.’ And I just totally didn’t hear a single word. 😵‍💫

Guilty! ☝🏻😕 And I feel SO bad after the person is finished talking and I realize I couldn't tell you what they were just talking about. Paying attention to paying attention is quite the distraction. 😆

To avoid this problem every time i listen to someone, I imagine that the person speaks with the subtitles I read in real time. I feel exhausted after, but I maintain my friendships 😂

Omg, adhd hits me soo hard that I try to focus and I’m doing so well at it that I’m proud of my self and that is literally what I think about the whole time. Sometimes I get do frustrated that I just break down in tears. 😭

I can relate to this. I struggle a lot at work because I can't focus on what's being said to me. Over the time, I felt my boss got more patient with me by politely checking on if I get his point whenever I space out or sound confused. I think he figured out I am not neurotypical. 😅

My dad never trusted people that don't look you in the eye. He always thought they have something to hide. This is what he learnt in his life and he grew up in a different era understanding things differently. Sadly back then there was little to no understanding of ADHD. I learnt as a young girl to give eye contact even though it meant I wasn't as attentive because I was concentrating more on what I was looking at rather than what I was hearing. I wasn't able to do both for some reason. I even experimented in class. Later as a teen I suspected I had ADD I went with my mum for an assessment in the mid to late 80's and was told I didn't have it. Too bad that back then girls having ADD/ADHD wasn't a thing. It was thought that boys have it or that if you didn't present symptoms exhibited by boys that you don't have it. I wait on an NHS waiting list that will take I don't know how long to be seen.

I found myself apparently listening to someone today and answering 'yeah oh right' and I have no idea what they said as I was in the middle of a zone out then realised and snapped out of it and carried on a 'conversation' 😅

When I try to make eye contact I get distracted by the discomfort of staring into their eyes so I try to focus on not focusing so much on their eyes and of course I miss most of what they’re saying 😢

Oh dear, I do that all the time. Especially when I am seriously making a conscious effort to focus. It's like the Lee Evans sketch where your brain leaves you for a while, and the ah oh is when you realise you missed everything they just said
