New research from the University of Central Florida shows children with ADHD need to fidget only when using executive brain functions – like watching a math video, rather than a Star Wars clip.

He's just trying to calculate the exact radius of the chair's threshold.

“This is pi, it is used most commonly in this class with circles. Make a circle now with your feet and the spinning chair”

ADHD is a very serious learning disability that isn't really taken as seriously as it needs to be. You see that physically he's not interested, but mentally aswell is what you can not see. I have ADHD... the mental side of it is like having your brain tell you 3 or 4 different stories at a time on top of what ever you're currently engaged in. I can be sitting around fully engaged in a subject, and my brain will be telling me all about the things I did last summer, the things I could do next summer, the things I should go buy, the movie I saw a year ago, the food I ate last night, the food I ate 6 months ago. (Those are things my brain just went through typing this) it's exhausting. I get 5 hours of sleep at night, I wake up ready to go, no matter what through my physical exhaustion, my mind says LETS GO NOW!

I love how he has his hands crossed while watching star wars, as if he’s attending a ceremony or something

TL;DR: the experiment was not about whether the kid was bored or not, it was whether the kid was actively processing the info or just being entertained.

Note: the article in the description of the video states that the math video was on processes for solving multistep addition, subtraction, and multiplication problems, while the star wars clip was anakin competing in a pod-race. It comes to the conclusion that the math video engaged the kids senses and he was fidgeting to help him be more focused, something adhd people do—while the star wars clip did not require extra thought, just engagement.

“That’s just using the outcome to explain the cause, ” he[guy in charge of this experiment] said. “We have shown that what’s really going on is that it depends on the cognitive demands of the task. With the action movie, there’s no thinking involved – you’re just viewing it, using your senses. You don’t have to hold anything in your brain and analyze it. With the math video, they are using their working memory, and in that condition movement helps them to be more focused.”

What a studious guy. At the same time as I was watching math, I also practiced 90-degree, 180-degree and 360-degree angles with the chair.

NEAT dude.

It was, so far, the funniest thing I saw this year. I literally laughed for the first time in a long time, and it made me feel so much better about my ADHD struggles..

I'm laughing the hell out of this whilst trying to tell myself that it isn't a meme, even if the format wants to tell me otherwise

I was diagnosed with ADHD since my teenage. Also suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Not until my mom recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 6 years totally clean. Never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms.

Very cool study!
My friend accompanies kids with learning disabilities and autism in a special school (the classes are like 6-8 kids). There, the kids are allowed to move more freely, walking around the room with their school work in hand. This kind of research helped in creating the understanding that this movement is beneficial for people when taking in information and especially for those who are already struggling.

I find it so fascinating that this new knowledge is being applied in these special schools and that I often hear from adults working from home how they like being able to stand at their desks sometimes (or work on a desk treadmill or how they generally prefer sometimes getting up and walking around/do chores while thinking about a task) yet we still ask of almost all children in regular schools to sit still at their desks for half of the day.
