i'm so glad he said he liked rock, because i took one look at his hair and guitar and thought "Now there's a man who listens to RnB"

I hate the mentality of "learn on an acoustic first, and then learn electric". It's so stupid and counterproductive.

AND don't ever buy a kid an electric and not get him or her an amp!!!

I started on a nilon string acoustic (because that's what I had). Then I got my Tele that I've played ever since. If you have a guitar, you should start on that, but if you don't, get whatever guitar you want!

In my opinion all guitarest should take there own path

I only use sheet music in jazz band because the people who write the music aren't guitar players. That's probably the only thing that's really going to require you to learn how to read standard note.

I love the last one about getting the right type of guitar for what your child wants to play, I remember when I told my parents that I wanted to learn bass, the first thing they did was ask what kind of music I wanted to play and who my favorite bass player was. And when I told them it was John Myung and that he played a 6 string bass, they researched some stuff and bought me a 6 string Ibanez GSR206B ; it's because of that, that I fell in love and still play to this day. if they had forced me too play on a conventional four string then I probably wouldn't be as in love with music as I am today.

Parents tell their kids to play an acoustic first because they think it is quiter!!! And they hope they will give up before they want an electric! They don't realize how loud an acoustic is. Or that they can turn the electric down pretty low. Plus for practicing, it can be off completely, not to mention headphones.

Lot of salt in the comments... but for the 90+% of people that just want to be able to pick up a guitar and knock out a few basic songs, this is great advice.

I've played guitar since 1961 when I was nine years old, and I taught over twenty five years. I'm now sixty six years old, still playing and learning. The single most valuable thing I ever learned was how to not only read but to also sight read. When you can read there's no limits to what you can do. Also learning the circle of fifths and memorizing the neck is mandatory if you ever want to progress beyond the basics. I also don't care if anyone agrees with me, because I've seen my way work for years.

Dude I see your point but learning scales is crucial to develop your melodic ideas and style and even more If you wanna get super shred and do soloing

LOL, I too started on an acoustic because everybody kept telling me it would be better that way.
While they were right (my technique has improved splendidly) it was really difficult to master the "classical style" of playing the guitar (different fingering, no thumb shenanigans, etc.). When I switched to the electric it felt like I was playing guitar hero on easy mode. Everything was easier to play. However, now that I'm older I've returned to my acoustic. Nothing is cooler than playing fingerstyle guitar. I just love that I can pick up my acoustic and play it outside, or anywhere I like.

When I was a kid, at my first lesson I told my teacher that I liked Maiden and Metallica and wanted to learn that stuff. He scoffed and told me that rock players have no talent. We started with the Mel Bay Primer and went from there. I had an old cheap acoustic. I couldn't have been more bored learning Hot Cross Buns.

If you have a guitar, you can make music with it.

I started learning sheet music back in September after 10 years without it and I'm grateful that I learned that. If you're a session guitarist you definately need to know how to read sheet music, but I guess if you play in a binary Djent band you don't need to learn how to read sheet music.
It's a useful tool, it just depends on what you wanna do

I totally get this video, i just told myself at a young age that anything that i need to learn progress as a guitarist, i will do but first and foremost i just need to have fun and play the songs that i like. My #1 tip: take it slow and dont take it all in at once, and just have fun!
