How Long Does Xanax Withdrawal Take?

Xanax withdrawal generally occurs in two forms: acute and protracted.

Acute withdrawal symptoms are symptoms that occur shortly after taking Xanax for the last time, and they clear up quickly compared to protracted withdrawal symptoms. With protracted withdrawal, symptoms continue long after the cessation of the initial acute symptoms.

Xanax has a half-life of 8 to 16 hours, meaning it exits the body relatively quickly compared to other benzodiazepines. This means withdrawal symptoms may begin within a few hours of taking Xanax if a person does not take another dose of the drug.

Acute Xanax withdrawal generally lasts for 5 to 7 days, but protracted withdrawal symptoms can persist for months.

Patients may experience “rebound anxiety” for weeks after their last dose of Xanax. Rebound anxiety is the presence of anxiety that may be worse than the initial anxiety for which a person began taking Xanax.

Wrong, withdrawals can last years. Rapid detox of benzodiazepines are the worst way to go

I took 0.5 mg Xanax retard twice daily for 18 months because of constant nervous breakdowns. (family problems) The doctor said I could just skip the dose, the amount was so microscopic that I wouldn't even notice. Cold turkey almost killed me. Finally I reduced it by 0.1 mg every 3-4 weeks. I'm free for 6 weeks now, but it's been hell and still is and I'm still mostly unable to work. 24 hour headaches, circulatory problems, heart problems, bone pain, rheumatism, without the beta blocker I would already be dead. I'm suffering from extreme heat and restlessness, night mare + night terror, as well as low and high blood pressure, brain fog, panic attacks that I didn't have before and depression. All my teeth hurt and my stomach is bloated like a pregnant woman. My skin is dry and in a horrible condition.I have aged years in these months. I look like a drug junkie . Driving my car is out of question. Social isolation, no understanding from anyone. Nausea and weight gain. Flu symptoms that won't stop.No energy at all. All new symptoms that I didn't have before. I don't recognize myself. I' m 62.from Europe

2 days after last dose is laughable...24 hours absolute most. 4-6 weeks withdrawal is even more laughable...more like 2 years and if you're not lucky could be 5.

Try six years of hell and counting. NEVER go to a facility to withdraw from benzos. Needs to be a slower process that will likely take months or years.

My god the lack of awareness is infuriating, benzo withdrawal can last YEARS, how is there still no awareness about Benzo induced neurological dysfunction aka BIND/Post accute withdrawal syndrome. Cmon bruh i was a short term user of only 4 weeks and my symptoms lasted for 2 years! It was not all in my head lady.

Completely wrong and dangerous statement. It will make people think that "3 to 4 weeks" of unreal pain will get them trough it. Not even in 3 or 4 months if the patient goes cold turkey.

The only way to quit benzodiazepines is to reduce your daily intake very slowly each 20 days to a month over a very long time, which can be a year.

The addictive power of xanax is gigantic, and the pain of accute whithdrawal symptom is not even fathomable.

The side effects caused by long term use of benzodiapines (months or years instead of the "safe" 2 to 4 weeks max) are in most cases unavoidable, and wont go away, we are taliking about cognitive losses and early dementia in the worst cases.

Any medical professional or rehab center that go the easy and fast way with xanax detox is a danger to the patient.

I'm 8 months clean from Xanax, still having withdrawal symptoms, although improved greatly from say 2 months, 4 month and 6 months, still not gone yet. Weakness, joint pains, headaches, insomnia, ringing in ears, still some anxiety to name a few and I get up and do things every day, I know there are people who can't get out of bed nearly a year. It seems like the average duration is 3 years, in some cases longer. 2-4 weeks would be a cakewalk.

Ok so i was on two doses a day of .5 mg each so one mg a day for almost a year then when my ex had a mental breakdown and ended up eventually disappearing on me without explanation and the pain threw me into a downward spiral and I doubled my dose in February of this year and ended up tapering down in march by the mid March i was completely off of Xanax. Im deeply depressed about my ex and have been the whole time since she left and that plus the withdrawal driven depression added on top of it its been too much grief to process some days and I have been having serious panic attacks but tonight was one of the worse ones yet so i decided to take 1mg after almost 6 months after tapering down to zero xanax did i just restart the whole withdrawals process? Or am I gonna just gonna have to stay on the track of not taking any at all after the 24 hours it sits in my system and expect that my withdrawal period wont be substantially increased?

I am addicted to xanax. I need help. How to reduce the dose. I take 2 mg daily. Should I change to diazepam?

My use was, .25 mg or less a day for 3-4 months. Usually.125 mid day and .125 mg at night to sleep. Not high at all. I didn’t think I needed to taper off such a low dose. I’m experiencing WD symptoms. Brain fog, hand tremors, insomnia. I do not expect to be withdrawing for years. I pray not.
