I use this same method. The way around the potentional issue of data loss from the layered registration marks is to include a few extra on the film that wont be lined up. That way you have a backup for registration marks to use. Great to see someone else using this method.

When you spin the press never use the tri-loc platen, it can move very slightly. Also we found that it was easier to use 2 people to setup when possible. 1 to hold the screen in place and the other to tighten the clamps.

Whats cool about your videos is these are the common problems all printers face. Good stuff.

Cam, we do the same thing. Since the template marks are taped at the top just flip it back when exposing so it's out of the way then flip back down to register the next film.

You don't need to under base on your black either, we had a master platens that the other platens need to align to then your trip lock is always started on that one it's usually the one that holds the best registration.

Do you think screen tension may have something to do with the registration? We have some OLD screens in our shop that we have to micro compensate for shifting during the print stroke. Even if it looks perfectly registered, the print is the tell all.

Hey Cam...I was wondering if you still use this method of pre registering directly on your exposure unit. If not, is there a reason you stopped? I was thinking about doing something similar myself but I want to be sure it actually works properly.

I've found when setting up a multi colored job on my manual (98% of the multi colored jobs I do I just do on the automatic), instead of using the micro reg, after I clamp the screen down when it looks like it's basically in, I grab a hammer and tap the screen until it's perfect. Lol! Sounds crazy, but it works!!

You make sure your platens are at the same height and level, make sure your off contact is in the same spot,
Then adjust your registration bearings or gates to make sure that they are putting the screens in the same place on each platen they can over just a bit they go left and right, your platens level and plane go up and down.

You can add a second registration mark to the image and then place it so its exposed even though you put tape over the place on the screen where your two part registration mark lands.

YO! check your press arm clamp. If you can wriggle it left or right when it's at the down position. It means the clamp is not tight enough. Once you fix that. All your registration will be bang on. Keep up the good work :)

even with our CTS which is a digital light engraving from Germany I get 85% success rate on a challenger 2 . but also using Newman rollers. level heads and ensuring that clamps are gripping frames fully.

From my experience triloc works best on automatic presses, triloc goes down 90 degrees when it separates from the screen, while on manual press the screen curves a little when lifting it. You need to push the top edge of the triloc down to release the screen from the 3rd point of contact. It might shift your triloc from the pallets locking lever specially when it's a little loose and it will affect the next color that you will setup, I used a coin as a spacer in between the screen frame and 3rd point (that single point of contact attached to the triloc) when done, remove the coin before lifting the screen, it will give you a little space and you don't need to push the triloc down.

When you are dealing with the negative registration marks, can u not make them more narrow all the way around, and make the positive registration marks, with a longer crosshair marking? Not sure but seems it would make it easier if the crosshair logo was a bit longer..??
