This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. John Lonergan argues that poverty and social deprivation are the main contributory factors to young people getting involved in crime and believes that education is the only pathway out of the poverty trap.

John Lonergan joined the Irish prison service in March 1968. He was appointed Governor of Mountjoy Prison in 1984 and served in that capacity for over 22 years. He retired from the prison service in June 2010 having served over 42 years.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

The man shows vision and hope thinks outside the box quite literally, if only more of the people in power in Ireland held the same views as him the country would be the better for it

That education starts and is more reinforced by the culture and the parents. Theres only so much the feds can do.

Let's educate the university professors and experts about the poor distribution of resources. All the "status quo " education only perpetuates the low wages, exploitation of most workers, etc etc.

you are talking so fast sir. I needed to use the transcript in order to understand and follow what you are saying.. But other than that I consider it as one of my favorite topic since our country do not really care about the lives of those in the prison.

Only education can save Ken Doll from a life of sanctioned criminality. And only education.

The mind is a terrible thing to lose . There's power in the library system ! What would the world be like if we invested as much time and funding in public education ?
