Those of you who want to check out the current Insiders Preview of Windows 11 have a few choices as far as where to install the new OS. You can set it up on its own dedicated computer, but that means you need to own a spare PC. It can be installed as a virtual machine using free VM software, but it could run slow if you don’t have sufficient memory.

A better option may be a dual-boot setup. In this case, you’d use a computer that already has an existing version of Windows, such as Windows 10. You’d then install Windows 11 in its own volume. Each time you boot up your computer, you would then need to choose if you want to use Windows 10 or Windows 11.

You need to do a little bit of prep work before you can dual-boot Windows 11. First of all, and to nobody's surprise, you have to have a computer that can run Windows 11. This is easier said than done, because the system requirements to run Windows 11 are quite a bit higher than what people expected them to be.

If your PC can run Windows 11, download the Windows 11 ISO image and create a bootable flash drive. If you don’t have a flash drive, you can mount ISO image files instead.

I have installed windows 11 on a totally separate drive to test it out and now suddenly, after testing and both worked, the windows 10’s boot up is messed up and looks like the windows 11 installation did something to it. I’m getting “reboot and select a proper boot device...” any idea how to fix this?

Would this also work in reverse if you have windows 11 already installed, and want to put windows 10 back onto your machine? Curious if it will work. Thanks!

Does installing to a smaller unallocated space somehow prevent Win11 from having too much bloat...give it a smaller footprint? After which you can then expand the volume and keep Win11 small? Is that the purpose?

If u have a product key for just windows 10 would it work on 11 also if u decide to fully commit to 11 and upgrade to that one alone and uninstall windows 10?
