I also have a 2 basin sink, and I like your approach. I do it very similarly but I typically fill the side with the dirty dishes with warm soapy water so the can dishes soak, meanwhile I use the empty basin for the rinsing. Also when in doubt I use my finger as a scrubber because I can feel dirt that my eyes would totally miss if I used a sponge. The rest of my cleaning process is identical, which is very validating.
