Ear wax plays a vital role in ear health. It helps to prevent ear infection and helps with ear cleaning by picking up any dirt or debris that accumulates in the ear canal. Normally this ear wax would fall out of the ear taking any dirt or debris with it.

How to remove ear wax?

Many people use q-tips/cotton buds for ear wax removal at home this is one of the worst things you can put into the ear as this can lead to an increased ear wax buildup or in extreme cases impacted ear wax. The best way to remove ear wax is to let your ears clean themselves and not to put anything smaller than your elbow in your ears!

How do I know if I have an earwax blockage?

If you experience a change in your hearing, discomfort in the ear or jaw or a feeling of fullness in the ear canal you may have an ear wax blockage. Our advice is to speak to your Doctor or local Audiologist who can take a look in your ears and assess whether ear cleaning is needed.

Ok so as somebody who has eartubes (it started on my left ear back in 2021, but came back again in both ears) if it doesn't drain on it's own then you will HAVE to get ear tubes. Trust me you won't lose your hearing and the tube eventually falls out on it's own. Call your local E.N.T (Ear Nose And Throat Doctor) for the procedure for eartubes. It is kinda painful but you will be relieved. God bless you guys and I hope you get better!

Thanks for doing these educational videos. I'm deaf in one ear due to a congenital condition. I love learning about these things, it helps me understand my own condition better.

Yesterday I impressed my doctor with knowledge about my ears and he asked me if I’m studying to be an audiologist 😂 love learning things!

What could cause fluid to get permanently trapped if a CT scan confirmed no issues with the Eustacian Tubes? I've have a recurrent issue with just my right ear filling with trapped fluid. I've had a tube put in 3 times now, with still no answers as to what could cause it to begin with. Never had a problem with my ears until I flew home from my honeymoon with a sinus infection. Super painful takeoff and landing with the pressure changes. That's when all of this started.

I think i had this as a kid as well as massive buildup of earwax and then infections, leading to the popping and crackling to be extremely painful. Thankfully as an adult I no longer suffer from this

Do decongestants help unblock these tubes?

Wonderful explanation Rhys. My 3 year old has persistent fluid in her ears, so that when the air puff test is done, there is very little movement of the ear drum, however she does marvelously in the sound booth hearing test, and is doing well in her speech development. She also does not suffer infections thankfully. Her audiologist and I are somewhat baffled though, how her ear drums have so little movement but she appears to hear so well. Have you observed this phenomenon in a patient before, or do you have any theories or explanations as to how this could be the case?

I used to suffer badly with Eustachian tube blockages due to colds and flu and spent weeks manually popping my ears and then when they finally cleared there was a satisfying pop, hissing and a few days of over sensitivity and it was back to normal!
