Why Are People Leaving the Political Left?

In today's deep dive we discuss why many young people are leaving the political left. I share my theory on why I think this is.

Hi I'm a mixed race girl. I don't really like being told constantly I should feel like a victim over absolutely nothing. I've never been "discriminated against" for my race. Even my most troll, edgy and, dark friends never made fun of me for my race. Playing the victim in every situation can make you justify doing awful things.. similar as to pulling the race card whenever anything remotely bad comes your way.

I also refer to instances where people think that since you’re of a certain race or minority group, you deserve to be coddled and you cannot do anything for yourself. I’d understand someone with specials needs, or a physically disabled individual well.. needing certain things to tend to that, but I argue mainly race here. Colleges simply accepting black/brown individuals and handing out scholarships, not only feels like performative diversity, but is dumbing down those individuals which in turn feels more racist. The idea that black/brown individuals are just little babies who can’t do anything on their own, is just so infantilizing an well.. racist.

Omg thank you so much for this. My partner and I have been saying this for ages. We've gone from "boys don't play with dolls" to "it's ok if some boys like to play with dolls", to "if a boy plays with dolls he must be a girl" which is just another version of "boys don't play with dolls".

I'm also fed up, as a bisexual woman of a lot of the crap going on in the LGBT sphere. We've come so far and now it feels like we're going backwards again.

The left went off the deep end. I'm not conservative, have never voted conservative, and don't support a lot of conservative policies. Yet I am in a weird position where many leftist consider me "far right" because I'm not left enough. It makes me feel uneasy.

im 21 and growing up on the internet, i can say from experience the internet taught me to be liberal. i would defend gender ideologies that made no sense to real life, and i started questioning my real beliefs because despite me having a lot of values that are more left leaning, i could not help but notice the extreme meausres left wing activisits will go to get the world to adjust to their views.

i would consider myself more in the middle, i have a lot of liberal personal outlooks on life, especially when it comes to women, but im tired of pretendning that we dont live in real life and all conservatives try to do is to keep the balance of realife going. right wing people tend to be more reasonable and logical to REAL LIFE, weather we like it or not.

left wing people tend to be super ideological, which there is nothing wrong with bringing progressive things, but its the way they have been doing it lately that is so shameful and embarassing. its getting to the point where their ideologies are messing with the balance of basic human understanding, like sex and gender.

I think it's funny that my generation fought against labels, now we have a label maker with unlimited tape. I completely agree, you hit the nail on the head, people didn't have any real struggle so struggles had to be invented or manifested from nothing.

I think you are right, to a point. The only thing I can think to add is how corrupt our bureaucracies have become. They no longer serve anyone but themselves.

When I realized that I had conservative thoughts, I started having psychological problems I never imagined this would happen. I thought I was alone, but then I realized that there are people who are centrists and support and criticize both sides at the same time. I think people should learn to criticize their side and see the mistakes, but they are just stans.
