Why we’re leaving the United States FOREVER (in our 50s!)

My wife and I are in our 50s and we've decided it's time to leave the US, a country that has given us a lot over many years but with which we feel done.

The reasons are many, and not necessarily what people think. Most folks assume it's for political reasons and sure, there are things we dislike about the US in that regard, but there's more to the story. Much more.

Watch on and let me know what you think!

Do you relate to our reasons? Have you pondered leaving the US yourself?

Leave a comment! Would love to hear from you.

(A huge thank you to my beautiful family for making this video possible. You mean everything to me. 😊)

I am not leaving the USA, the USA is leaving me. Toxic political divisions, crime, an obsession with material items, gun violence even in the schools. This is no longer the USA I grew up in. Thank you so much for putting it in a way I struggle to share with my friends. I wish you great joy and happiness and look forward to following your journey.

I totally understand. The last six years in the US have been absolutely nuts and America is losing its soul, it’s values, it’s mind, it’s decency and it’s democracy. You’ve raised a great family with great values. I wish all of you the best of luck. Keep us posted on your travels and the search for intelligent compassionate life elsewhere. We’re thinking about doing the same thing.

What a great video! I just moved to my homeland of Italy at 70. I was living in the Midwest but had a burning desire to be home. I was just 4 when the family moved to NYC. I am very happy I sold everything came to Italy with only 10 bags❣️

I am in my late 50s, and I have already signed the contract to sell my house in Florida, saying good bye to my 38 years of life in US. It feels amazing to close out a chapter and starting a new adventure!

Well said! I moved to Europe 5 years ago and never looked back to Portland. It was a lot work to sell all real estate and get rid of most material possessions but well worth it. I feel healthy, relaxed and safe.

The trade-off of living in (most of) the U.S. is social isolation and rampant materialism, in exchange for better economic opportunities. Not every one can justify the trade-off, not every one can deal with the superficiality of the friendships, the lack of walkable areas, and the fast pace of life.

I don't believe you will have a single regret. I sold my house in California and moved to the south of France (by myself). The experiences have been amazing. Despite being born in America, I never took root. For me, France fit like a glove. Also, you have that magical incentive of having all of Europe so close for weekends and more. Best wishes.

I am 58 years old and cried watching this video. I connected to the presentation and felt I was related to you as many videos I don't. This felt very authentic. I am ready to start my journey. Will keep watching your videos. Thanks to Covid 19 I realized how stuck and comfortable my life was....time to get out of my comfort zone. Thank you again for this amazing video. Do more!!!

I’ve been stuck and thinking of selling my cute beach cottage on the California coast…. Your video really helped me decide. I’ve been yearning to be near my “favorite people” too. Im 58 and scared to change, but more afraid to be stuck & wait to die (alone & away from my sons & their young family). I was encouraged! Thank you!

Came across your video totally by accident but wanted to hear what your reasons are. My wife and I have been in the USA for over 13 years (we are currently 32 and 31). We have a beautiful daughter, beautiful dog, beautiful house and a rental property. In general, we have a beautiful life. However, we went to Poland for vacation with our 10 month old daughter couple of weeks ago and everything has changed in our minds. We want to go back to our home country. A lot of our friends went back and they don't regret it. I feel like as a human, my home country has much more to offer especially for our daughter. I think that USA is not the same as it used to. I love America and will be forever thankful for what if had offered me because I wouldn't be able to achieve the same if I started from scratch in my home country many years ago. I am just happy it is not only me and that there are others (like you and your family) that talk about it out loud. Thank you for this video and best of luck! :)

I did the opposite - sort of. I lived in the US until I was almost 70 (where I lived happily in the other Portland (Maine.). I realized that my life would just continue and nothing would be different. I came to Israel 12 and half years ago. I learned another language and built a new live. I live in Netanya and it’s a rare day that I don’t see the see. It’s also a rare day that I don’t have conversation with someone from what I would consider an exotic/ interesting country. Yesterday: Tunisia and Algeria. Every day there’s something new to experience. I feel so blessed

As an American expat for several decades I entertain no doubt that your awakening will bear fruits far beyond your present reasons for leaving the US. Congratulations on your second video and above all for ‘seeing’ the light.

I came across your channel after recently discovering your son Nathaniel Drew’s inspirational YouTube channel. My husband and I watched the episode where he interviews you both about leaving the United States… and, at the end of the video, I found myself crying. Because this ache and longing and desire to move abroad from the US to Europe is SO strong within both my husband and I… our hearts and souls. Logistics and practicalities and fear and doubt can consume, but both of these videos inspire me to actually do something about this dream. Thank you for sharing and for inspiring others to find that which ignites a feeling within them… I long for a place with culture. Where people have passion for life. Where different languages are spoken. Dreams are not meant to be just dreams.

Guys, well done! I leaved my country Russia when I was 23. Since then I used to live in another 5 countries, now in Israel. All this is amazing experience which made me understand - I dont belong to any country, my country is whole Earth 🌍. If u r opened positive person - you will find communication everywhere

Loved the video. My husband and I moved to Spain in February in our 60s. Our reasons were more political in nature. We have been married for 39 years and now feel like we're newlyweds starting out a life together with a choice of el menu del dia everyday. Undertaking new adventures keeps one young. Be well & safe travels.

Wherever you go, there you are. Not much changes when you change places. Find the place that suits you best but don't expect things to be much different because you are still you. Moving to be close to family is a great reason to move. Good luck!

Such a beautiful way to put it all into words. We have been living in Portugal on and off for 10 years now and the longer we are here, the more foreign we feel when we visit America.
