What is a protocol?
Protocols are how networked computers communicate. But unlike human speech, computer communication has to be highly structured and extremely well-specified.

Credits: Talking: Geoffrey Challen (Assistant Professor, Computer Science and Engineering, University at Buffalo). Producing: Greg Bunyea (Undergraduate, Computer Science and Engineering, University at Buffalo).

Fantastic. Everything you said applies to all computer components whatsoever though. Every transistor speaks a (very simple) protocol and we make it more complex starting from there, building cpus, rams, network controllers, programs etc all implementing some protocols and talking to each other. This is not internet specific at all.
