Think of network protocols as common languages that enable computers to communicate across networks. They're a set of rules that essentially dictate how servers, routers, computers, and phones communicate. In fact, they're what make the internet possible.

Network protocols can be sorted into three types: Communication, management, and security. And, there's thousands of protocols that fall under those categories. Common protocols and protocol suites include TCP/IP, POP 3, and SMTP.

I have noticed that if a user posts too many comments & subcoments on a presentation, they might all might magically disappear & reappear under your original comment. Because they are not under the primary heading, your comments make little sense. So use restraint on how many comments you respond to on an individual presentation. Also, if you do not click "Reply or Comment" ist will not save or post. --- I was once accused of posting "clike bait", I had to look it up. Obviously the owner did not think so because it was not deleted.

I work in building automation industry. We use a communications protocol called BACnet. But there are many types of building communication protocols; Modbus, LONworks, EnOcean/ZigBee (wireless), to name a few. A lot of the time, we need to integrate with building equipment (pumps, chillers, boiler, etc) that communicate using a different communications protocol. In this case, a gateway is required to translate the data.

Do we rely on things like "firewalls, antivirus programs, and anti-spy software" to protect us from insecure protocols? I though that best practice would be to replace the old protocols with new ones that have security measures built in e.g. https, ftps, etc.
