Troubleshooting my Recent Gaming PC Upgrades | IMNC

Recently I upgraded my Gaming PC with a Corsair AX650 PSU and a second Radeon HD4870. At the end of the previous video, I left things on a bit of a cliffhanger as the system wouldn't boot correctly with one of the GPUs throwing out an error. This video includes various steps I take to troubleshoot this system to try and get it back up and running with the new upgrades.

Thanks for watching! I hope you all enjoy...

With the lights going dim, remember Tom lives in the UK where they use whats known as 'Ring Mains' wiring and that is huge contributor to why the lights dim a little ;)

Tom I know you've probably heard this a million times but you could try taking off the heat sink and adding new thermal paste or giving it the oven treatment.
Great Video as always :)

Good run through of the fault finding process I have no other tricks in my bag the graphics card is toast sorry to say after reading the manuals I sent you a link for it is power delivery but that can be on the card itself to the gpu some one said try the oven trick this may if your lucky resolver any bad joints on an old card last chance with that but after that it's a door stop. Thanks for the vid very entertaining and fun to hear you ranting on about power delivery as a spark I totally agree. Good luck with the hunt for a replacement.

Bad luck man! It seems like something in the card is dead. You might have to try getting a new card. Good luck!

Well, we appear to not be having much luck with tech tom, my guess would be to try cleaning the power connector on the card? Either that or it's toast, a bit like my iPad pro that was a xmas gift but the CPU died according to the geniuses but the quickly exchanged it for a new one (thanks Apple Store Cardiff) so, I guess try cleaning the connectors or check the power circuit, might be a bad solder joint somewhere, I wish you good luck tom!

is there any damage inside the plug on the card or any obvious missing components around that area on the PCB

I can take a look at it for you, shipping is the only issue

Maybe you could try updating the motherboard and GPU BIOS and/or updating the card firmware if you can. You did mention that CrossFire/SLI is software based.

Take a heatgun and it remove the heatsink and all themal paste and pad and try reflowing the VRM and GPU i did it on a "dead" 4000 series gpu and it works again .I know its not the most ideal way of doing things but its worth a shot since its trash anyway it would be a great experiment ...start re-heat from the back of the card and let it cool down and flip it over and re-heat the top side ...do take care of the plastic parts so they don't melt off
Happy tinkering :D

bake it in the oven, like a other card you had a few years ago.
Maybe that will work and if it fails you have nothing to lose anyway.

OK, just to re-iterate the bleedin obvious, you mentioned when swapping the power cables that the connector was very tight, it's also a power delivery fault by all indications, so . . .
Could there be a fault with that socket, is there a bent or missing pin, is there something inside the connector ? Could the connector solder joints on the card be bad ?
If the power socket is tight could that lead to a damaged component on the card (squeezing it to get a good grip when fitting the cable) ?
I would get out a powerful magnifier and strong light and have a really close look around that socket area.

do you have the motherboards speaker connected so you can hear the error beep code?

So what happened to the quicksilver hackintosh? Last we heard you were dealing with reliability issues and had to switch to the MBP setup. Updates?

One of these 4870 cards is on ebay right now sitting at £2...

Have you tried cleaning the edge connector on the new graphics card? I use a pencil eraser (rubber) and rub the contacts clean. It might work.

Did you try swapping the crossfire cable to the other option on the cards? Just to see if that might be it?

Looks like there is probably a bad solder joint somewhere in the power circuit of that Card...
