It's really telling that even with the advent/rise of players like Mancusso, Ostro, Asato, Henson, etc... Guthrie remains kind of untouchable.

ive never seen this guy run out of ideas in his seemingly bottomless bag of tricks. there's never been a time i listened to Guthrie playing and thought "oh i've heard him do that before.. that's one of his cliche licks he falls back on" like with virtually every other guitar player. i think this is both a curse and a blessing- there's really no "signature" Guthrie sound because he's literally too much of a genius to repeat his vocabulary or phrasing and doing so somehow seems beneath him. i'm also blown away by how melodic and emotional a lot of playing is, while also maintaining virtuoso levels on the technical side- another talent that few players can muster.
