====================

Elon Musk revealed his plans for SpaceX to go to Mars in September of 2016. It involves the building of the Interplanetary Transport System and he plans to launch the first humans to Mars in 2024.

NASA's Mars plan is far more involved with investigating the problems of long-term interplanetary flight, as they plan to build space stations in ciclunar orbit over the course of 14 years, the Deep Space Gateway and the Deep Space Transport, which will become the planetary vessel they will use for the first manned mission to Mars in 2033.

NASA's plans revolve around the new Orion capsule, which is the first manned spacecraft NASA has created since the Space Shuttle. It is meant for deep-space travel and habitation.

Meanwhile, SpaceX plans to launch the manned version of their Dragon capsule, the Dragon 2, in 2018, which will open up more opportunities for the private space company.

Time to rigorously test both plans in Kerbal Space Program. Will let you know the results of which is best.

Last year at university I actually had to write a 25 page research paper about precisely this topic, comparing the private space industry to government run approaches like NASA. During my research I found a few sources that were compelling and labelled what you've mentioned in this video as SpaceX being the "direct approach" method, while NASA uses more of a "stepping stone" method.

The problems with the stepping stones is that you can get bogged down and side tracked at each step, possibly never reaching your end goal. And the problems with the direct approach is that if not enough safety is tested for you could end up reaching your goal, but having suffered more casualties than necessary.

In the end I came away with the conclusion that the direct approach method was the best idea, as long as enough focus could be kept on safety. I'd rather have made it to Mars and suffered a few losses than never made it at all because of bureaucracy getting in the way of progress.

Give spaceX NASA's budget and we'll have warp drive by 2033.

2018, they tested Falcon Heavy and it worked really good, so their's plan is not that crazy.

I think NASA plan for landing sounds a lot like "I didn't think I would get this far"

SpaceX... They just launched the Falcon Heavy

It's amazing to think that America went from the Wright brothers (1903) to landing on the moon (1969), 66 years

The year is 2018 and the falcon heavy is tested and woring and dragon 2 is preparing for its launch date

The thing is that NASA is kind of a Federal Beaurocracy and, like most beaurocracies, a lot of the resources they use are not being allocated very well.

I'd pay a space tax...just saying...If only we could choose where to direct our tax dollars.

What a shame the Cold War ended. If America had the great Russia competing for mars we'd be there already. Great video too man thanks. Now back to criticising flat earthers.
