This is the story of arguably the greatest achievement of SpaceX - the leading Space Transportation company in the world. It not only guaranteed the future of SpaceX but it also made space transportation significantly cheaper than during the days of the NASA Space Shuttle program.

Mentioning blue origin "doing it first" isn't really fair, what Blue Origin does is not even close to what SpaceX does with the first stage. Landing an 18 meter rocket that took off, remained vertical, reached Mach 3 at less than 100 kilometers, then fell to the ground still vertical is quite different from landing a 50 meter tall first stage that took off, did a gravity turn, reached a height of 200 kms and speeds of up to Mach 7, then did a boostback and a crazy flip maneuver, and finally landed vertically.

Yeah, I was on of the people who voted fot space stuff on the poll.

Newsflash! Something made in 2010 is better than something made in 1981.
Edit: Interesting you didn't mention that the falcon second stage is not reusable but you mention the tank on the space shuttle is not reusable.

It looks like the next iteration of the Raptor Engine will be the best rocket engine ever in terms of thrust/weight ratios AND cost / manufacturability.

So any rocket they go on, yes, will be the best. The engine is so good the military already wants to do one of their buyout structures where they don't even let other countries use it, that's how good it is.

Accurate, with facts I had forgotten, plus rocket videos. Upthumbed.

Thanks so much for uploading. I had the chance to see a rocket launch in 2018. Amazing experience. I posted a pretty cool clip of the trip to my page.

I knew that the space shuttle was better than every rocketship it was the top first retried plane!

Its a shame that nasa allowed themselves to become secondary as far as space agency. We need more people like Elon. That type of passion is gonna take us forward. Its time to get off this rock and be able to survive else where

Spacex has done a fab job - that said, they are repeating efforts that this country did pretty well in the 60's but for less cost. Is that a waste? - like someone in a silo inventing the telephone when it has been around for 60 years? maybe. Can Falcon return a large satellite or a faulty section of the space station to earth?. The Shuttle is 70's tech - with fault tolerant Software version 1.0 that never really was improved - and it was dangerous to fly. yet it is the closest thing to sci-fi like the Millennium Falcon which fly's back to a planet and lands like an airplane. Not low-tech capsule that parachutes back to earth.

The space shuttle was an engineering marvel I'd only expect future craft to be more advanced so I don't really compare the shuttle did its thing and we'll for a good bit of time - minus the fatal lose of shuttle Challenger Jan 28th 1986 losing the pioneering explorers teacher Christa MacAuliffe Francis (Dick) Scobee, Pilot Michael Smith, mission specialists Eliison Onizuka, Judith Resnik, Ronald MacNair, and engineer Gregory Jarvis. Respectively. The shuttle is a testament to man's desire to reach the stars. And spaceX thanks to Elon Musks brilliance and man's newest technology I'd expect us to be better.

The space shuttle was marginally reusable. They basically had to rebuild the thing after every flight.

The Space Shuttle failed by compromising crew safety to an unacceptable degree and being more expensive than the expendable launch systems it was designed to replace.

We'll see when, if spacex can re-use them rockets.
