1. 300-500hz dynamic eq (cut)
2. Tone match a reference track
3. Mid-side eq
4. Small bumb at 80hz

Man. Gotta try removing some of that low end in the sides. I like that. I’ve also been experimenting with mid/side eq specifically with my guitars and using side chained dynamic eq to remove competing low end and mids competing with the bass in the middle. Really fun stuff to play with and experiment and find those techniques that work for you. Also I like the explanation of the 80hz trick. Low Control, Jordan’s plug-in from black salt audio, has a preset I believe called kick helper or bass enhance. Something like that. But it’s like a 15% boost at 80hz and now that trick makes more sense.

Great video I always start my masters with some side eq

Killing it as always Miami! Man I would love an episode where you went over side chaining with something like Track Spacer using Reaper. I struggle so hard with it like I get the grouping of the kick and snare on a bus with track spacer. Then all other tracks routed to another bus to then be side chained with the trackspacer but I'm not getting how to have it routed via the side chain portion of the track spacer plug-in. :(

What is that song you used for the dynamic EQ? I've heard it several times on here and always get that part stuck in my head and always forget to look it up/ask.

Damn man. Didn’t realize Mike Kalajian’s rise to greatness. He was the assistant engineer on a skate punk project I did back in 2001. Time flew by FAST for us old punk dinosaurs. SEIZE THE DAY YOUNG ENGINEERS! Time isn’t on our side.

SUPER DUPER ULTRA NEWBIE QUESTION
Why the yellowband of the gain goes down and up as the fab filter MB? If I set my proQ3 the same way and down the gain, the yellow line it stays in the same spot. Is there any config I've been missing? Thx <3

Cant argue with Billy Decker he da man!!!. Dont Tape machines bump at 80Hz?

There is no such thing as a fixed frequency like 80Hz which will always work for all material. It completely depends on the material and the key of the song.

Sage audio is pretty decent at 50 bucks for affordable mastering for anyone trying to use a service

if you have a good mix, mastering will be minimal. a limiter is all that is needed for the master of a good mix. if the mix was done in a bad mixing environment, then, and only then will multiband compression and EQ be needed. I often come across beginner mixers who think they need to EQ and compress the hell out of their master. I just want to make it clear to the noobies that those things should only be done when necessary.

Other educators advise against the techniques you suggest... Well, everyone says their own, and we have to find our own way. In my experience, indeed, most of these techniques are not applicable in most cases (my background: 17 years in music, I run my own studio). Cheers ✌️

The tone-matching feature doesn't seem to add anything of value.

Man maybe I'm getting old but these mixes sound so harsh to my ears, especially the vocals... I could not listen to any of it for longer than 10 seconds max before clicking next or turning it down massively
